You know im feeling that right about now. I picked up a 96 z24 and did small stuff to it that wasnt that hard(maintenance), but a couple of weeks ago it developed a pop in the back, leaky wheel cylinder took out my entire drum and components..rusted to hell. Now im stuck driving the trans am with summer performance tires till I replace everything...

i see this sort of thing posted on other forums. people with V8s wanting better MPGs.
i dont know about the rest of you but i didnt get my camaro for the gas mileage. if you are worried about gas mileage, buy a prius

**** poor attitude to have. I would never own a prius unless it had a LS swap.Its an LSX car for christs sake. It will get damn good MPG if everything is right.

I didnt get my Z28 for gas milage But I did get my TA for a DD,and I have several friends with Z28 and TA that get upper 20"s to low 30's. I know its capible of better Way spend the extera few bucks on gas when I dont have too. Thanks for all the responses.

I got my car for a blend of performance and milage. As I have upped my performance, my miilage has went down. I used to get 27-30 mpg on the highway with 2.73's and a stalled auto. Now with 36# injectors, 3.42's and a cam, I am down to like 20-23 mpg on the highway and 11.5 all day in the city, drivng like an old lady

Yeah, the other day I was walking by this sharp looking, later model 4 door cavalier for sale-silver/pewter with the factory chrome wheels, body effects and spoiler and I figured......hmm...maybe as a daily...looked kinda like this:
But then I realized that this would be akin to chopping my dick off so I just kept on walking...
Not that this helps, but I've been driving muscle cars for most of my life; gas mileage is something I forgot about a long time ago..

500 miles or better per week is a lot. But you have to crunch the numbers to see what's best for you.
You aren't going to get very much better MPGs no matter what you do. Consider yourself lucky if you wind up getting 25mpg.
To purchase a beater to drive daily would require initial purchase price plus tax/title/lic/insurance right off the bat. Tax/license yearly and insurance thereafter. Then there's whatever tune up and maintenance costs required to get the thing into daily use status.
To get a beater that only gets 30-35 mpg would take a LONG time to recoup initial layout. Then there's the recurring charges to own a second vehicle. Gas would have to be pretty expensive to make it worth your while.
However, what price can you put on keeping miles off your car? True, they are special to us, but not so much to the rest of the world. Very few of them are collector quality. But to keep one pristine is a joy. I hardly ever seem to drive mine any more. I have a good sized truck, the daily driver, and a KZ1100 to keep oil and loose, too. I only have a 25 mile commute most of the time, and usually put on about 125 to 200 miles per week.
Still, my daily beater paid for itself in about six months. I got it to replace my truck in daily duties. The Z28 was put away for winter, and the truck was getting about 10 mpg. I got an 89 CRX that gets about 40mpg. For every dollar I spend filling up the CRX, I would have spent 4 dollars filling up the truck. This was at the time of $4gal gas.
I still drive the CRX most of the time. The Kaw a lot during the summer, and the truck and Z28 whenever I can. I need an new compressor on the Z28 now, so no foggy window times of the year right now.
