It's not as bad as some people make it out to be. My '02 car is a DD, and I've driven it through every type of weather and road situation you could imagine. From snow covered expressways to un-plowed parking lots and everything inbetween. During the winter of '08-'09, I was commuting 80 miles a day with this car, and we got plenty of snow here in Chicago.
The trick really comes down to equippment and driving style. With true snow/ice tires, in a skinny size, and proper weight in the back, it will handle anything that a "normal" FWD car would handle. Granted, I think being a 2.73 geared A4 helps, I would imagine the M6/aggressively geared guys have more trouble.

This allows me to live on both sides of the fence, driving an enjoying one car as much as possibile, and keeping the other as a super low mileage perfect condition garage queen.

Yesterdays probably the final drive of the year for mine, other than when it gets moved back to the farm for storage. This is by far the longest I've still had it out but the weathers been pretty nice around here recently.

It's a struggle unlike anything you've seen. I never thought 245s were wide at all, but on snow it's like having 355s (since mine are street tires). I also don't have any weight in the back either.
I only drove the car once in the snow last year (no salt yet, just fresh snow), to go 1/2 mile up the road to do donuts at this school's parking lot (they were off). Well, once your are rolling its all good, but I had a slight incline, doesn't deserve to be called a hill, and it took me like 2 minutes to get "up" the beastly incline that was all of 100 feet long. I had to start in 3rd gear with very little throttle, then quickly downshift to 1st so I didn't bog and then once I spun again back to 3rd, then back to 1st....
Needless to say, the car stayed in the street until I shoveled the driveway.
