Default What to do to my very first 1998 trans am?

So about 6 months ago I bought my very first trans am ever. The only thing I've had before this was a Toyota. I bought it with SLP long tube headers and lid, which the headers go straight back with a 3 inch pipe into flomasters. It's an automatic, has a cam upgrade. I wanted to get some suggestions on what modifications you guys suggest for me to do? I want a good, fast and strong take off without any hesitation. Let me here the suggestions.

First, try and be more specific about your goals. After all, a properly maintained '98 T/A should take off fast, strong and with no hesitation with no 'mods at all. Are you looking to break into the 12 second 1/4? Looking to take on road courses? Both? I would perform basic maintenance just to make sure you have a solid platform to start experimenting with. Then, once you're sure the car is in good health, try taking it to a track where you can see what you and the car can do together. Once you get the results then you'll have a better idea of what you need to do to the car...

+2 with myk......i'm not an automatic guy, but it seems a stall + 3:73 gears might be in your future....3600rpm stall is popular....also, if your budget allows, a good set of heads....ported ls6 and 5.3's seem to make good HP #'s.......i hear flowmasters kill our cars....there are lots of better muffler options out there

I do have another question, I am about to change my spark plugs. What are the best plugs to use?

it depends on how loud you want your car to be.....SLP loudmouth's are raspy, almost like having no mufflers at all......magnaflow is very tame and deep until you punch it, then they really open up....of course i'm partial to sweet thunders in a true dual setup, they're kind of in the middle

For plugs I would go with NGK TR55's. As everyone else mentioned just do basic maintenance first to make sure its in tip top shape and go from there.

def upgrade ecu, NGK tr55 plugs, then 3600 stall, try that before gears. then ls6 intake and a cam. and upgrade heads. congrats on the purchase.

I disagree. This would be a waste unless you plan to build a very serious engine that needs very indepth tuning. For mild-to-moderate cam or heads/cam setup, I would keep the stock PCM and just go to a good dyno tuner. Lots of people make good power on the stock '98 PCM.

The OP says he already has LT headers and a cam, so the car should be pretty strong as-is, unless something needs repair or it hasn't been tuned. If it doesn't have a stall, I would start with that (3500+, IMO).

Whats the deal with upgrading the ECU. I know that the 98's are different than 99-02, but whats bad about the 98.
