They had a chatroom style interview with the head of marketing and design for the ZL1 on Camaro5 at the begining of the ZL1 anouncement at the 2011 Chicago Auto show and a lot of people asked this question. They said they spent a lot of time with weight distribution and weight reduction with this car and it should weigh less than the current SS.
True story.

The wheels might be wider, but they weigh less at least. The wheels are forged and have a combined weight savings of 22 lbs! 22 lbs of the rotating mass is pretty good, but not enough!

From the transcript from the online chat w/Al Oppenheiser the chief engineer of the 5th gen camaro's:
Al Oppenheiser:
"We have strategically gone after mass savings on the ZL1, such as the Wheels and Tires are 22 lbs less than the LS3 Wheels and Tires. The Carbon Fiber 'Mowhawk' is aimed at mass reduction, all to compensate for the additional mass of the Supercharger, Suspension upgrades, etc."Wednesday February 9, 2011 3:05 Al Oppenheiser

I know there has been more info on this from additional trustworthy sources, but I can't seem to find or remember which interview it was in. He also went on to say that it had 52/48 weight reduction. It definately isn't going to weight several hunred pounds more than the current SS, like many seem to think. It will weigh at least the same or close to, or less than the current SS, definately not a whole lot more.

Sounds good on video clip. Some of the reason these cars are weighing so much nowadays is all of the ammenities they provide. If you factor in the weight of power seats, navigation unit, premium radio/amplifier/speaker setups, sunroof, large bulky wheel/tire setups, and a spectrum of modules to control the silliest of things it becomes easier for me to understand why these pigs weigh so much. I'm sure there is plenty more weighing it down including the several hundred feet of wire on top of these items. Personally, I'd buy one today if I could get a stripped down version - 4 wheels, big motor, couple of seats and i'm good to go. Hell, I'd love to see a manual seat, manual lock, manual window, no a/c, radio delete version of an SS. Sell it for 24-25k and sign me up.
