I was having fuel mileage issues as well. I knew that these cars were really efficient and since I bought at the beginning of January the city mileage has been terrible and the highway has been okay. Even when I was being super easy on it. And the Speedo was off too.
Just took it to a tuner dude that is a good friend of a friend yesterday. Found out that the car doesn't have the original 323 rear end, but a 273. The car was still tuned for the 323, which was wayy off. Car already runs wayy better and I'm expecting some really big gains in the fuel mileage department.
Long story short, you may want to get the computer tuned.

Agreed. Depending on what you want, and where you want to pull. I know a guy with a 700hp vette that runs 273s. He races from a rolling start. Day to day driving, which is what I use my car for, the 273s will be fine for me. And I can always change them once my car becomes a weekender if I want to.

I have a 30 mile commute to work, so I do about 60 miles per day. 10 miles of that is a two lane road with about 6 traffic lights, and a 35mph speed limit. Traffic normally flows around 40mph on that road.
The rest of my commute is highway. The first few miles of that the speed limit is only 50.
In my normal weekly commute I average just over 22mpg. It varies, it might be 22.1 one week, or 22.5 the next, just depends on how much I use the AC or if I do any extra city driving. But it's pretty consitant. I usually keep it around 55-60 on the 50mph highway, then kick it up to just under 70 using cruise control) for the rest of the way. I usually drive witha light foot, no racing or burnouts.
I also have 2.73's, which I feel actually hurt me on the 35mph road. In OD it seems like the car could use a bit more RPM.. in OD it's barely turning 1k rpm at that speed.
I've never done just highway, or just city, so I can't break those down individually. Although the more city I do, the more the mileage drops (obviously),and it's pretty noticeable even by just watching the gas gauge.
I'm also running 275/40/17's all around, and I actually noticed a drop of 1mpg last spring when I switched from Michelin Pilot A/S's of the same size to Nitto NT555's. Worth it though, the Nittos perform much better.
It's really hard to compare from one person to the next though...your results may vary.
It all depends on driving style, driving conditions, and they type of drive..such as type of roads, traffic, and speed limits. That's why I went into some detail on that.
That's why there's such a variation in figures.... so one person claiming 28mpg may have actually gotten that, but under what conditions? Most likely they filled up right before getting on the highway, drove a few hundred miles, then filled up right after getting off the highway. So yeah, 28mpg is completely possible.
However, if you drive mostly around town, sit in traffic for five minutes at every light, do alot of short trips, and like to gun it at every light, yeah don't ever expect to see much more than 15 or 16mpg.

This is what I get. 2001 Z28 A4, 3.23 160,000 mile completely stock. Driving with cruise on @ 68-70 gets 25-26, 21-22 combined. I can tell you that gas with 10% ethanol will lower gas mileage 2-3 mpg. I have seen this in my toyota tacoma. It dropped to 26-27 mpg from 30 with 10% ethanol. Gov conspiracy. They say they want better economy out of vehicles but they f*** up the fuel and then jack the prices sky high too. I thought high gas prices were George Bush's fault. How long has he been out of office now?
