The owner's manual does NOT recommend this viscosity for an LS1 engine, so why use it? (unless you have done some modifications to your engine that require it). In fact under page 6-14 in the manual it states that GM does not recommend you use anything other than 5w-30 or 10w-30.

Yeah, I've been using M1 0W40 for about 7-8 years now in all my LS1s with great results.
Because best wear results from LS1s are usually shown with oils that are on the thick side of a 30 weight or the thin side of a 40 weight, and M1 runs on the thin side of their rating. The owner's manual does not take these brand specific details into account.
I've looked at enough UOAs over the years to see that M1 0W40 is one of the better oils for an LS1; that's why I use it.

I used M1 0-40 euro with good UOA results also, but I think it might still be a little thick if you are not racing it. Lots of reading on bobs the oil guy have led me to believe that 0-30 is a good oil for street use and low wear on start up. UOA for me have shown similar between the 30 and the 40.
It definitely is a good oil to use but to get the BEST you gotta try them.

Another thing about the factory recommendations....
I remember reading that for LS1 cars sold for use in Australia, M1 0W40 was actually one of the factory recommended oils. Now, I've never seen an Australian owner's manual to confirm this, but I'm sure I've read about that more than once over the years. This being the case, it points to US CAFE and US EPA regs effecting the recommendations for US spec'ed cars. This would explain why the oil performs well in these engines, but doesn't appear as a factory recommendation here in the US.
