catback or stock exhaust w/ muffler delete??
Im pretty much trying to mod my trans am on a budget. Since its a current DD it will be a bolt on, stall only car.
With that being said, for the 1st mod, I was thinking about a catback (hooker, slp, magnaflow etc.) vs just deleting a muffler on a stock catback and throwing some tips on (i have a friend who gave me some
By doing some calculations, i figured out that by cutting out a muffler and throwing tips on will cost me about 40 dollars. And if i buy a catback, it will cost me the catback plus the installation fees.
So the question is, what would you guys recommend? I have personally witnessed my friend cut the muffler out on his 2000 SS and it sounded great. Oh and Im looking for most bang for the buck both power and sound wise!
Keep in mind, i will be doing Headers and Y pipe shortly after.

Well, the full catback will flow a bit better, but when you consider the cost difference between the $40 it will cost you to do what you've suggested, and the cost of a full catback, then it seems like the best bang for your buck will come from the simple muffler delete.
Thing is, you'll have to do (or have done) some fabrication work to the stock catback if you want to delete the crossflow muffler and just run pipe, but still have two opposing tail pipes. Unless I'm misunderstanding, and you already have a replacement muffler that you plan to just weld in, or if you don't mind just having a single tail pipe.
On the other hand, you could also consider just adding a cutout to the stock I-pipe, and leaving the muffler in place. Then you have two different sound options, and a standard cutout is only about $30. Just something else to think about.

If your going to do headers I would just put a cutout in the I pipe, that way its cheap and you can still quiet it down if you want. Also being in Cali if you just hack the muffler off pretty sure you will fail inspection

Thanx gents!
I completely forgot about the cutout and may go that route, and in cali, car without a muffler will still pass smog as long as it has the original cats

I took the temporary budget approach and cut off my muffler at the inlet so that it still kinda points down, I think it sounds fine until I get headers and an ORY pipe. Plus it was free...

I know a guy who has a muffler delete and it sounds horrible. Another option if you don't want to do a full catback is to get a Hooker or Magnaflow stock replacement muffler. It will weld right up to your stock pipes, while flowing and sounding better than the stocker. The muffler will only cost you about $100.

If/when you finally get more bucks, you can still use the muffler or sell it and get a complete catback.

Personally, I'm running the muff delete and think it sounds pretty good. Sure it has some rasp to it, but I wanted a CME and the cost of a catback plus the CME setup was outrageous. I cut the muffle out and routed a single pipe down the center into two tips similar to the CME tips.
I get compliments on it all the time, I'm eventually doing LTs and TDs dumped, so for the time being I think my exhaust is great.
To the OP though, if you plan on doing LTs and a ORY soon, I'd definitely go the catback route. No muff on that setup is too much for me haha
