In the USA registration goes by the VIN of the vehicle, not individual serial numbers of each major part of the car.

over here in oz we have to have an engine # on the rego form as well as the VIN#
so how do you go if you change an engine
no paper work ??
just drop the big block in and away you go ?

It's a lot easier over here. It varies by where you live, but for example I live in one of the strict counties in Ohio. I only have to pass emmissions test and a visual inspection for cats. They don't care what kind of engine I have in it as long as OBD tells them everything is koshar and they can see it has cats with thier mirrors on a stick. My mom lives in the next county 15 miles away and they don't even have to pass emmissions. My truck is registered to her address until I renew this year my truck is now 25 years old and dosen't have to pass emmissions anymore. I bought the truck out of state and to get an Ohio title a DMV worker came out to match the VIN to the VIN # on the out of state title and issued me a new title.

wow
wish it was like that here
we have to have an engine # on Reg paper work
so they can see that you haven't put a bigger one in
you can go a few ci bigger not much legally
but it has to pass the emission test noise test and cats of course and new engine must come from the same year or later then the one you take out
and have all the pollution gear attached
wheels must be no bigger then 15mm dia bigger then oem and track no wider the 1"over oem
and tyres have to be the wright load rating
no drag radials or slicks on the street
lot of elegal cars here
