Royal Purple ... Why do many dislike it?

X2, if you look at RP's website it talks about how much power and MPG's their product can have without any real science behind if as to what exactly separates their product from other synthetic oils. Its all snake oil, just like K&N's 15 HP filters.

From my experience it isn't that it's a bad oil, it's that its changed over the years to a normal everyday synthetic oil.. With the price of amsoil. Amsoil actually IS one of the best if not THE best oil out there, not to mention they aren't much more money then RP, so why go with RP? I used to use RP a couple years ago, been on amsoil for the past 3 years, run 10w30 race oil in the trans am and normal 10w40 ams oil in my acura for DD.

They make 2 different kinds of RP. The kind they sell at MOST auto parts stores, including autozone is the lowest grade, basic synthetic oil. The XPR RP is the racing oil & is much better( & costs more too) as it has a higher ZDDP content. You usually have to order it online. I thought it(the store version) was a great oil from a few "tests" I read about & a local performance shop recommended & sold it, but that shop no longer sells it. My experience with the store version of RP is its expensive, it gets dirty quick & darkens engine internals terribly, almost to a point of a sludge coating on everything. No, its not certified either. I switched to Pennzoil Platinum since.

From the reading I've done it's no better than good syns like Castrol Syntec and Pennzoil Platinum, but costs more.
It's also reported to break down under heat a lot quicker than other good synthetics.
I won't run Mobile 1 either, it's low viscosity and the fiasco surrounding it's base stock a few years back turned me off. I just catch Syntec or PP on sale and use those. Much cheaper and they're good oils.

Many people would rather pay extra for what they perceive to be better (it must be better, look at that price!). If they would learn more about oil in general rather than just looking at a product web site they probably wouldn't spend that much.
When you buy the expensive hammer, you can usually se why it's a better purchase. Oil, not so much. More research is involved, which separates the informed consumer from the impulse buyers.

When I bought my SS new in 2002, I changed it out to Mobil 1 5-30 for the first 3 or 4 oil changes. It had about 10K miles at that point.
I saw an advertising for Royal Purple and decided to give it a try. This is going back about 10 years ago and I never heard anything bad about Royal Purple then. Only thing I new about it is what I heard or read from the advertisements.
At first I thought it was just me, but the engine sounded louder. Piston slap and valvetrain sounded much louder. After about 200 miles I decided I wasn't hearing things and it DID get louder running with Royal Purple in it.
I dumped it out and went back to Mobil 1 and it sounded much better. The Royal Purple experiment was over and I never bought the stuff again.
My current F body is now running Amsoil and I have no complaints with it.

Take product claims and certifications with a grain of salt. ASE certified holds as much stock as a Geek Squad tech that is A+ certified. Industry claims about power increases is similar to TV manufacturers comparing contrast ratios in their advertising, even though there is no standard when claiming one ratio is better than another.
I say try different versions yourself and draw your own conclusions. I am currently running RP for the first time and havent noticed any real difference from the Pennzoil Synthetic I was running before except that valvetrain does seem noiser now than before. But I can't be certain that the RP is the cause.
