what are the best tires for traction on the street. I currently am running the 16" stock tires tires that are recommended for this size rim on a stock 1999 T/A. I would like to fill out the wheel wells, with some big rubber , but lowering the car is not an option at this point due to exhaust restrictions. I currently have bfg kdw's installed in the stock size. I am looking to go to larger, taller size but not look ballooney. I don't want to have to resort to the BFH option. Basically what is the the biggest i can go with on the stock 16" rims. Thanks for your input. The reason is not for looks, but for traction.

Thanks for your reply! But if you could be a little more speficate about the tire size and did you go with the 16" rim size? Thanks, don't want to be **** about it, but what size and what brand did you go with ? Thanks alot.

If you want to fill out the wheel well your going to need to get a wider rim which is hard to find in a 16 inch rim. Another option would be to get the 16's widened but that usually costs as much as new rims would.
Realistically I think the widest tire that is recommended for the stock 16 inch rim is a 255 while most stay at 245 and IMO going any bigger is like putting 315's on a 9 inch rim which is just plan stupid

Okay... either go nitto 555r with current set up or get a 16x10 rim and get some 26" M/T street radials - they are seriously GLUE on the road - but do wear out alot quicker than most other tires due to there soft composite material.

If you want the best traction, the best tire is definitely the MT 255/50/16 radials. The downside is they won't have a long life at all and they definitely aren't made for rain.

I believe M&H makes some 26" drag radials for the 16X8 wheels. My friend had some and they were definitely beefy as hell (tall). Hooked like a champ and they drove and lasted great, even in the rain. Not sure on specifics though. Let me know and I can find out for you. He doesn't get on here anymore.

I'm on my 2nd set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s. They are pricey, but I love them. Excellent wet & dry traction. Check the ratings at Discount Tire or Tire Rack.
I'm still on my stock 16" rims as well. It's not until I hit near 400rwhp with my cam this year that I felt I could use a little wider rubber when accelerating hard.
But for now, I'm enjoying the chirp :-)

I've got Nitto 555r's on my car and have had no issues rain or shine. I do have brand new M/T drag radials on the Bogarts but I'll probably be getting rid of those since I got them before realizing how hard it is with an M6.

MT Street radials for traction hands down imo
Nitto 555r for better tread wear, and best DD DR, Excellent straight line performance
nitto NT05 from what I hear has a lil better treadwear than the 555r, and has better cornering than the 555r and very good straight line performance
nitto 555's upfront imo

Thanks for all the informative replies members. I am going to check out the nitto's 555r's and also the goodyears. DR's sound nice but I think longevity is going to be a major factor in my choice, since I can't really afford the soft rubber compound and frequent replacement costs right now. And by the way, this has to be the best forum, hands down, for information concerning F-bodies. Thanks all.
