I am about to remove my LS1 out of my 02 z28 so I can tear it down to figure out what exactly needs to be replaced (sucked water through intake, spun a bearing). Here's my thing though I only have a low profile racing jack. I don't have a cherry picker although I'm trying to find someone around here who has one. I was just wondering what's the easiest way to get this thing out? Guessing it's going to have to come out the top since we don't have access to a lift. Any tips to make things go smoother or save some time?

id say drop the whole front craddle, then u can see if anything needs replacing since your already there. it will take about 3 hours with a lift. if not its every easy to bring them out from the top. i helped do one in about an hour

I am with WS-sick on dropping the whole front cradle from under the car. It took me and a really good friend about 5 hours to do in my driveway with two floor jacks and three jack stands.... Just take your time car tends to get unstable when you jack it up that high.... LOL

well your gonna need some sort of "lifting devise" unless your strong enough to pick it up by hand lol. either out the top with a hoist, lift, fork lift, cherry picker, or tree limb strong enough to hold the weight or drop the craddle...still need the lift tho

Thanks a lot for that video, that really helps lay it out. Looks like it's going to have to come out the bottom. We'll try to jack it up as far as possible and put it on stands, so I'm hoping it will be high enough for the engine to clear

Pulling from the top isnt bad, just be sure to pull in IM prior. Also if doing this way, removing the engine mount brackets helps alot! Done it twice out the top in a ls1 botg times with the trans still connected. Not hard, just time consuming. If I had access to a lift, bottom would be the only way imho.

Honestly it depends on the space. I much prefer out the bottom. But if you have a 1 car garage, it could be better for you to do it out the top. If you do it out the top you really need to get one of the lift plates that replaces the intake to give you better control.
IMHO pulling it out the bottom is SO easy, because you pull the trans and harness with it. The most difficult part of pulling the motor and trans is removing the harness (to me). Thats mostly eliminated when going out the bottom other then the alt and starter.

easiest way to remove an engine is to hire a mechanic!!!
Or if you do it yourself, then disconnect the engine, transmission and exhaust from car, and lift the front end of your camaro with some nice jacks

We ended up doing it in my garage. We were able to pull out the bottom in about 5 hours.
Neither one of us had ever done a motor removal by lifting the car off the engine, but it wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be. After unbolting everything, we put a jack under each side of the car lifted the body off the engine/trans assembly.

We made a rolling cart (thick board and 4 wheels...) then put it on the jack then jacked it up to the oil pan and part of the trans till we could get the k member and trans crossmember unbolted. Then lifted the front of the car with an engine hoist, and slowly lowered the jack to the floor then wheeled the engine and trans out from under the car. Keep in mind the car was also already on jack stands. I may have some pictures if you really need. It was super easy.
