4L60E (STOCK)+ Burnouts= One pissed off guy when he has to rebuild the trans because of abuse
Main reason i got the 6speed. id rather replace a diff than deal with a busted automatic trans, and i work at a transmission shop could probably build one for less than $600... I just don't like auto's lol, great for drag racing though, just not something i do enough to worry about being super consistent

So many of us have gone countless passes in the 1.6-1.5 60-foot range on the stock 10-bolt (A4). You have to make some serious power to need a new rear in an A4 car (assuming you can keep wheel hop away).

The cost to make a 6-speed hold up will be just as bad. Autos do great with a performance build and a stall, the 6-speed will need an upgraded rear and a better clutch. It's really a wash in the end.

and doing lots of big smoky burn outs and donuts will eventually take its toll on that 10 bolt as well, sorry to say it but these cars are getting old and things are going to break if your abusing the car
and by all means if your going to do it have fun, that is the reason we buy these cars.. It is to enjoy them and sometimes beat the **** out of them, to each their own..
its really just about putting the info out there that these cars are not invincible. and your going to be replacing parts, if your doing stuff like that every day,
on top of how expensive its going to be to keep tires on it. lol
HAVE FUN just saying
not to mention how much heat hes building inside of that stock 4L60E, I agree built and stalled the 4l is a great trans, but in stock form not so much

Few years ago I knew a guy with a 02 A4. For some reason he replaced the rear tires with some skinnier than stock. IDK something like 225/235's. He always thought he was cool cause he could just stomp on it and light them up. Well, ends up one day he is calling me saying "man my rear end is making a bunch of noise". Whining and all kinds of crap. I think he told me a shop told him it needed new bearing, axles, some other stuff. About a $1000 worth of work and parts. He ended up selling it.
Just goes to show- non-sticky tires, A4, 2.73's. Abuse= $1000
He had only had the car about 10,000 miles.
As far as automatic vs M6 goes; I think in stock form the M6 is stronger. I am not saying that an auto can't be built. By all means they can be.
Its just I personally broke the sunshell in my old 91 GTA (700R4). Good friend had an LT1 car and the bands were burnt up in the 4L60E. Cousin had a formula and the sunshell broke. Maybe the autos just get tired once they get over 100,000 miles on them.

If you get bad wheel hop, you can easily blow the rear even with an A4, but if you avoid that, it can live a long time even with track time and decent power.....but of course, any time you beat on something it can break.
I don't think anybody ever said that. The point has been made that the rear end will hold up much better with the A4 than the M6, and this is 100% true. And if you want either to hold up under high power, then the auto will need a performance build (plus a stall, for ideal performance), and the M6 will need a clutch upgrade plus a rear end. Point being, neither one gives a free pass as you add power, you're going to need to beef up some portion of the drivetrain no matter which trans type you choose.

^^^^ what he said, I was never trying to argue any point about one or the other being a better setup.. Plain and simple either one can and probably will break at some point...
I mean if they made them bullet proof, we would never up need to buy new parts..
And i would be out of a job if they didn't break, I work in the transmission field..
There are a lot worse transmissions than the 4L60 that's for sure.

with a 6 speed you have to worry about breaking everything else in the drive train which is expensive and a stock t56 isnt going to last forever. a ford 9" setup costs more than a built 4l60e, plus a 500 dollar driveshaft and a 700+ dollar clutch.
my car makes 300rwhp, ive already broken a stock ford 9" case, twisted my truetrac, tore a poly trans mount in half, had to replace the slave cyl and master. now i need a clutch, once i replace that ill break the stock driveshaft, oh and the trans is getting kind of beat to. i could have bought an auto car, bought a stall and had it tuned and have had more fun and probably gone quicker.

RPM WS6; i agree there is never a free pass.
When I was looking for a car it just so happened that it was a M6. I don't regret buying the manual, if it had been an auto I would've still bought it. The manual in a LS1 car isn't like a manual in a truck. People have asked me before if I get tired of shifting gears all the time. I tell them I don't shift have to shift gears all the time, its not like having a 4 cyclinder S10 5 spd. lol I actually looked at a 97 WS6 auto, but the guy wouldn't come down on the price. Glad I waited out for the LS1 though.
Whether auto or manual they are just badass cars with huge potential.

Also had a 92 RS 25th anniversary. 305TBI, car was so clean
91 Mustang GT=lowest mileage of all of them and the biggest pos as well.
swore I would never own another when I got rid of that one. Never have-never will.
I always thought it would be cool to have a 3rd gen with a LS1, lots of work though.

yes i would love to do one some day, my 89 by the time the engine went out on it had 289,000 miles on it.. and i beat on that car all the time, that L98 had some torque mine had a small cam in it..
I don't remember the spec on it now it got put in like two years after i got the car along with exhaust..
its getting hard to find good 3 gens to start with now, unless you want to spend the kind of money it would cost to get an ls car to start with..
