A 454 LSX in a 70 chevelle would be sweet! Call some sponsers and get some quotes, it should give you a pretty good start on a budget.

It's sad that some people have forgotten how much power a Gen I can make.

If you are building a ls platform from scratch the cubic inches is really a small part of the price. The long block is really only the beginning of the cost.
intake and injectors with fuel rails, braided lines and fittings $2000
upgraded fuel pump, filter and lines $400
Headers $500 to $1300
I had tried to plan all my upgrades towards going with a big cube ls motor and in the end I added the rear end, clutch, drive shaft and then a 102/102 intake.
Then another new clutch and SFI bell housing.
I remember a saying about owning a sailboat. "Its a whole in the water where you throw money"
Good Luck

You will be in the ballpark, give or take some. There will be a lot of odd and end stuff since you are starting from scratch.

How attached to the 454 cubic inches are you? If you wouldn't mind stepping down a bit, you could do it for a lot cheaper. Hell you'd have money left over. Just thought I'd show you another option. Perhaps you do an aluminum 402 and call it a 396 SS since a lot of the 396 big blocks were actually 402 cubic inches. Let me know what you think and I can point you in the right direction for whichever route you choose.

I'm guessing your 383 is a gen3 though not a gen1.

The gen1 sbc is still good if your on a budget and want to put 250-300hp to the wheels for cheap in a older car, I plan to put a cheap 350 in my Monte Carlo till I've got the cash for a LSX swap. But a fully built 383 with good heads and a roller cam thats still streetable, your pretty much maxed out at 400rwhp and you can get that much hp from a ls1 with bolt-ons and a small cam. If you want to put 500+ n/a hp to the wheels lsx power is the way to go.

Jus to throw a total curveball at y'all. I read in a magazine (maybe pontiac high performance) where they were trying to use boost to blow up a 5.3, just to see how much it could handle. They wound up throwing an incredible amount of boost into the thing and made over 700 hp without hurting the engine as hard as they tried. We're talking about a stock, high miles truck engine. Turned out it was a 4.8!
Seems like you could pick up a 30,000 mile 4.8, do some modding and supercharge or turbo it and have plenty of dough left to build a forged 5.3 to sit until the 4.8 goes.

That's a rip off of the Hot Rod article. Except they made over 1200 hp and about 80 dyno pulls if I remember correctly.
