My 5.3 is getting up there in milage (200k) and am looking into replacing it. I'm very interested in upgrading into an LQ4 or LQ9. The goal is to have a pretty quick truck that still gets good milage and can be driven anywhere.
What are some things you guys suggest? Heads, cams, intakes? Not really looking for a loud obnoxious truck, but something that can be enjoyed on the street and surprise a few people. What are some good combos?

even on stock 317s I think you can get near 400whp with just a cam in a stocker LQ4. Lq9 would probably get you to that mark even.
While you have the motor out tho.. it's a good idea to do new oil pump, and at least inspect the rod bolts/bearings make sure they're good, compression check, take the heads off and make sure there's no damage to the pistons etc.
I added it all up on my lq4, if I did just a cam swap with the "supporting mods" (lifters, lifter trays oil pump rockers springs cam and all the gaskets associated) I came out to like $850.
This was all new parts tho, if you browse the classifieds and trade parts you can probably get it a lot cheaper.
an Lq9 with a cam would be pretty much a drop in 400+ FWhp.. should put you near 400 at the wheels, but they cost a little more (like twice what an Lq4 goes for) and are harder to find.
