Default Do I have the "dummy" temp gauge?

Hi all,

I just have a quick question, how can I tell if I have the real or dummy temp gauge?

I have a 99 WS6 that had a production date of August 1998.

Anyways, if I start my car and drive for a while it does the normal rise to 210. If I park the car and shut it off and come back to it after a while, I can sometimes catch the Temp gauge sitting in between 100 & 210. (the spot varies).

Is this part of the dummy's design or do I have a real temp gauge?

I do believe 98's had the only "real" temp gauges.

im pretty sure you have a dummy gauge. Only 98 fbodies and older, had a real gauge.

All '99+ cars get the newer "dummy" gauge, even with your early production date. If you really want to verify on your engine, you can look at the temp sender that's screwed into the driver's side head right above the #1 plug. The "working" temp gauge '98 cars had a 3-wire sender, and the "dummy" '99+ cars had a 2-wire sender.

'98 cars also had a different display for the temp gauge, with the first mark being 160 rather than 100.

1998 and back are Analog, 1999-up are digital signal on the Serial Data wire.

The 1998 Temp Sensor will read about 20* low for normal running temp when used for swaps using older GM Gauges. It seems the 1998 Cluster is the only one that was perfect for it. When it hits over 200 it's correct tho..dont ask me..lol..I look at it all the time with the laptop.

That 1998 Temp Sensor part number is 12551708

Thanks guys for the feedback!

I just know that sometimes when you have an early production date, things can be hit or miss.
