I have good luck with my Costco 93 and gogas 93. Costco is $2.53 a gallon and go gas is around $2.91 for 93. I've never heard of this Valero, do they supply to NC?

It's Venezuelan, vertically integrated from crude to retail gas station.

Valero is headquartered in San Antonio Texas, They buy crude from south America because they have the ability to refine the heavy stuff from there and they also buy Texas sweet crude for their refinery in Three Rivers Texas..

who would that be? Sorry if I'm missing something, or it's obvious, I've been spending 10 hours a day restoring my ls6 78 transam and I haven't seen the outside world for more than a couple hours a day lol.

I run 87 in my daily driver n/a 4.8 swap. The little 9.5:1 engine pulls strong to 7k and is stock other than a LS6 intake, 1721 cam, and some great tuning.

I'm going to try out a 212/218 115 Lsa cam whenever I can get around to it. It will lower cranking compression even further so I'm thinking it should be fine on the cheap gas

Over past few years, most retailers here have pushed the differential between regular and premium (91) from 20 to 40 cents. Fries me. I love it that the wife's G8 runs on 87.

I've thought about copying the low octane table to the normal table, running it, and seeing how it goes. Haven't actually done it because I know I'll be giving up hp. Might not be that noticeable just driving around town, though.

I found a "Casey's General Store" that still has the 20 cent difference so I've filled up a few times there now. I'm a little concerned that it's not Top Tier rated. Then again, I throw in a bottle of Techron a couple of times a year anyway.

That depends on where you live. 20 years ago (and even earlier than that) ethanol/E10 fuel was already quite common here in Chicago.

I've been using E10 fuels for most of my life, including cars that I have owned for over a decade. I haven't had any of the issues that many folks claim are common (even in my old carb'ed dinosaur cars, cars with metal tanks, and/or limited use show vehicles.) I just always fill up at busy, top tier stations that have fresh fuel and then keep that gas treated with Red Line SI-1 and/or Stabil if it's going in a limited use car. I store them with their tanks full to eliminate as much air (thus moisture) as possible, and I live in a region that isn't super humid (unlike the deep south) most of the time. Sometimes I only put one or two tanks of gas per year in these cars, no fuel system issues at all following the above practice.

We've been seeing that here as well over the last 10 years or so, at this point there is as much as a 90 cent spread between regular and premium (93 octane for us) at some stations. The lowest spread I ever see in this region is about 50-60 cents. Even though we have 93 as the "premium" offering at most stations (vs. 91, though some stations here do sell 91), back in ~2005 and prior it was only a 20 cent spread from it to 87. Not sure why the difference has grown so much in recent years.

If you know what you are doing, you can get by with almost any kind of fuel that is sold for that purpose in almost any engine (just to drive the car normally and slow).

If you do not understand what octane is, or how to intervene and maintain a modern internal combustion engine tuning module, then you are at the whim of the elements and anything can happen.

I put 87 in my engine when taking a long journey where I will burn 8 or 12 gallons of it just driving. No need for high output in that situation. A side of methanol could make up enough for low boost to be applicable, depending on what low boost is. This is where knowledge literally becomes power, in a pinch. Starting out with 93 in the tank is obviously better; but if budget is a concern, i.e. college student commuting, it might not be feasible to drive a 700 horsepower car set on kill mode every single day back and forth on a highway several hundred miles, etc...

better fuel (like E85 etc...) gives you more headroom for mistakes and poor conditions. Really great fuel will tolerate all kinds of abuse. However, your best economy will always be with plain old 87octane, or 85 or whatever, lower octane if tuned properly in the right conditions will give max economy.
