Gearing up for an LS swap in my 69 camaro next year since I just bit the bullet on the new rearend this year. Anyway, got it down to a 6.0 iron block, this will be mostly a cruiser and I am hoping to be around 425-450 hp range. I have looked at complete turnkey engines from Texas Speed and they seem to have about everything needed to get it going as well as a forged rotating assy. My question is could I get this hp by pulling a low mile LY6 with the L92 heads along with tranny( what auto do these come with generally??) for a savings that will be worth my effort? Also, is the stock bottom end sufficient? I realize I would be looking at intake/ accessories/headers etc. etc. This is my first go round with an LS but if it is like everything else I run into the little things that are overlooked add up to a major pain in the *** as well as a hefty price tag. Sorry so many questions, just wanting to see what I am getting into before wrenches start flying about the garage! LOL

Wheel or crank HP? For 425 HP that will be fairly easy, a decent cam with a set of ls3 heads and intake and you'll be over that mark. If you throw in some cnc head you'll be far past your mark. As far as bottom end no need for forging unless going turbo in the future or spraying alot. I'd leave the bottom end stock.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for about 450 crank hp. This is a street only car with some longer highway trips planned including Power Tour. I don't forsee any boost or nitrous etc. Mainly looking for a bit of weight reduction for handling, as well as increased reliability and mileage over the big block thats in there now. Another question I have is the tranny. I know the 4l80e will handle it, but wonder if I would have less problems fitting a slightly built 4l70e? I have heard the coolant lines on the newer 4l80e can require some trans tunnel mods to fit in this car.

if your looking for only those power levels at the crank from a 6.0 you really dont have to do much of anything , intake , exhaust and a baby cam. they make 340 stock iirc.

also for a transmission if its just street driven i would not suggest the 4l80e
making it work will cost a pretty penny and you will add a lot of weight.

my 99 camaro makes over 500 crank on a stock 346 bottom end and it does fine
thru a budget stall and built 4l60e , @ 25000 miles and 5 years , still running strong.

also with the swap , as you can see in my sig im doing one in a 67 camaro, and i assure you its the little things that add up quick. i got a low mile running 5.3 complete for less then i have in the intake and throttle body i needed to use, not to mention just had to drop 200$ on a used oil pan that will work in my swap. fixing to drop another bill on the motor mount kit.....

Thanks for the reply. Running into the little things has me leaning toward a more complete, ready to drop in motor such as TSP or a connect and cruise setup. I am confident I can do this but have very little extra time off work and would like the car to be down for as short as possible time.

Hell if that's the case do with a crate 416/427 ls3 built 4L60E tranny capable of 650 hp. And call it a day. Make well over your mark in a completely streetable motor and tranny. Grab a 3600 converter while your at it and boom. But I have done the research and you can build a motor thats bigger and better for less. If you go through tsp you can buy everything you need at one time

Since its just a cruiser I would grab a 6.0 from a junkyard add new gaskets,timing chain,oil pump,580" lift cam,headers and 2800-3200 stall and you will have plenty of power with plenty of trouble free miles.
