So I bought a car from the insurance auction.
2001 Camaro, probably a z28. Anyways it looked like a stock engine with some MSD wires and SLP lid and headers..
The car didnt run very well. I replaced spark plugs and that helped but it still flooded itself out from time to time.
So I took the car in to get it retuned on the dyno. It made 376whp and 389tq through a stock auto. (TQ Convertor was slipping a little) Definatly not stock LS1 numbers? This was on a Dynojet
Crawling around under the car is has an SLP TQ arm, and double diamond subframe connectors.
Pulled the tranny out to replace convertor and instal a shift kit. Numbers come back as LQ4/LQ9 block. where the numbers on head should be it has been machined smooth. Cannot find ANY numbers anywhere else on the heads or block.
So I get a good tranny and Convertor in the car, I replaced the stock LS1 intake with an LS6 intake, as well as fixed the cobbed up y pipe. (3" into 2 1/2 back into 3" all the way back) Like someone hacked in a stock y pipe.
Car has a stock 3:42 rearend 285/35-18 tires.
Take it back to the Dyno and tuned the car, it now put down 426whp and 452tq. Running around 19* of timing pulls to 6800 rpm. Cannot run any more than what it is on timing because it starts pinging.
So I am guessing it has possibly some head work, a cam, maybe higher than stock compression due to the timing not being able to go higher than 19-20*
That seems to be pretty high numbers for a car running 91 octane through an auto.
Any guesses on what it has, or how to tell without tearing heads off of the car?
I should also add that is currently has about a 4500 stall and the run was done with the convertor locked up.

I wish I could strike gold like that! Lol does the car sound cammed? That should tell a lot. Maybe get a small camera with a light and stick it in a spark plug hole to check for crosshatchings if its a 408?

There is only one station in town with 93.. wanted to tune on 91 since it is almost everywhere and if it HAD to have 93 didnt want to cause problems if I had to fill up with 91 instead.
So I think I need to figure out the compression, because if the timing is so low compared to most LSx engines he has tuned at 26* it makes sense there is soemthing done there.

you sure its a 3:42 rear? if so, its sounds like it use to be a 6 speed car that someone converted to auto. or it could be a 3:23 (one of the stock a4 rears). Also, why such a high stall? and they could potentially be aftermarket heads if they have been smoothed (or just factory ported ones). I dont know much about the ls2/lq9 but wouldnt an ls2 intake flow better? im surprised it had the ls1 intake. it sounds to me like someone just pieced together this car...

Here is what I have run down. It was a theft recovery car. The car has nitrous lines and wiring, but none of the components. The limited info I got was that the car had a TH400 and 12bolt in it at one time, but the stuff was stripped out and sold. Stock trans and rear end put back in it. Also the fastners for the intake are FAST style, so it probably had a nice intake and was swapped with a stock LS1 to get put back together and sold. Someone more than likely thought it was a stock engine with upgrades.
High stall? We have a drag strip 15 minutes from my house... and it isnt bad at all to drive on the street. It make a huge difference getting off the line or even from a 20-25 punch.

Did the intake ports on the heads appear to have any work done? You could yank off a valve cover real quick and see if the heads have a stamp identifying the casting manufacturer so at least you would know if they were a GM head. Awesome find!
