8th digit = "G".

G = LS1 for a 4th gen F-body.

Any decoder that tells you otherwise is wrong.

Any way to tell the year and if it's a auto or manny? I bought a front clip and it has a harness in it, but not sure of the trans.

Thanks guys!

10th digit = "W"

W = 1998

Nothing about the VIN specifies trans type. However, you can run the VIN through compnine.com or contact any GM dealer and ask for a VIS report on that specific VIN. It should contain all RPOs associated with that VIN number, and thus you can determine trans type.

RPOs "MN6 & MM6" = manual T56
RPOs "MX0 & M30" = auto 4L60E

If you drag your cursor over the vin that you typed and click it, it will decode it using LS1tech's VIN decoder lol

Click on "equipment" tab and it lists 2.73 gears, aka an automatic car.

It did list 2.73 gears in the LS1tech decoder, which would mean an automatic car if that was correct.

I would like to compliment you on your very first post here being correct.

Yes, but you don't get 2.73's in an auto TA with the limited slip tranny, you get 3.23.

2.73's were the typical gears for the auto V-6 without the limited slip rear. There are other combinations possible, I had 3.42's in a V-6 with the Thorsen rear that came with the performance package.

But in this case it appears that the LS1Tech VIN decoder is just wrong.

You most definitely could get 2.73s (GU2) with a limited slip differential (G80) in an LS1 Trans Am. In fact, 2.73s were the standard gear for all 4L60E (MX0/M30) LS1 F-bodies. 3.23s (GU5) were the optional "performance" axle ratio for the auto trans, and were a required option when WU6 (Firehawk), WU8 (SS), or WS6 was selected with an auto trans.

For Z28, Formula (non-WS6) and Trans Am, you could have either 2.73 or 3.23 (extra cost) with the auto trans.

Limited slip (G80) was standard on all LS1 F-bodies.
