How to tell What Motor it is when it's out of the car

Default How to tell What Motor it is when it's out of the car

How can you tell the difference between the LS motors I want to go to my local junk yard's but some of them have the motor out already I am looking for a LY6 is there markings on the block?

Yes, the blocks have the markings whether its a 6.0/5.3 etc etc.

Thank You for the reply is there markings to tell me weather it is a LY6 or some other block like a L76 or LQ9 how do you tell the different blocks apart sorry I'm new at this

i'm also curious. more specifically, I wanna be able to identify the aluminum block engines.

Easiest way to see if its an aluminum block...will a magnet stick to it? If the answer is yes, its not aluminum.

To the best of my knowledge:

If it's an Iron block and has 6.0l on front of block:
LQ4/LQ9 - Gen III, cam sensor in the top rear of block
LY6 - Gen IV, cam sensor on the front timing chain cover

Aluminum Block and 6.0l on the front:
LS2 - Gen III, cam sensor in the top rear of block
L76/L98 - Gen IV, cam sensor on the front timing chain cover

On the LQ4/LQ9 the only difference is the pistons, so no visual external differences as far as I know.

Thank You for the reply I picked up a 2008 LY6 today let the fun begin now to find a cam, oil pan, intake so I can put it in my 63 Nova

Congrats, there will be a lot more parts than just the ones you listed! Was it a complete drop out?

I'm doing an LQ9/T56 in my '67 Camaro right now.

Not a complete drop out just the motor check it out. I have a 4L60E already cant wait to get some LS3 parts I'm doing research for a cam now
