I let my filter sit in the sun for a day after oiling so it pulls up any excess.

I think that people expect the K&N to last as long as the paper between maintenance. I clean every oil change. I found that a kitty litter box filled with warm soapy water and a bristle paint brush works great for getting all the crap from in the folds. Move the filter in the water while it is upside down then brush in the fold then back in the water, change the water out until nothing come out of the filter. Let it dry in the sun, oil, sit in the sun some more and then back in the car. I keep a paper filter spare to throw in the car while I'm doing this because it can take a day or so.

Good thread. I have the K&N FIPK (thanks to the previous owner) and have the "recharge kit" sitting in the bedroom. Been trying to decide how I was going to do this and the info here was really helpful.

I truly believe there's a performance benefit however it might be at some long-term price greater than the cost of the filter and the oil.
