The headers I'm using make it a royal pain to even think about doing anything with the starter. Longtubes with gto t56.. Does anyone know what this boss is for and would it be ok to remove it? Having to angle starter around it during r/r is causing the trouble.

You can remove it, The boss is for handling the engine at the engine plant.

I removed one on an ly6 block due to headers and starter issue just like you. No worries.
