Angry breaking starters need help

so I drove my 99 SS last night and nothing was wrong with it. this morning I got into the car, tried to start it and there was a nasty grinding sound. I took out the starter, it was cracked. I replaced it with a brand new starter and when I tried to start the car it made a thumping noise, then somewhat of a winding noise like the starter and flywheel weren't engaging. Is it possible I installed the starter incorrectly ? I checked the flywheel and from what I could see the teeth looked great and it had no symptoms of going out when I was driving it. it is a ls7 flywheel with not very many miles on it. less then 10k.

any thoughts/ suggestions would be awesome. Thanks in advance !

Did you crack the starter mounting points on the block? This will cause that issue, and while it's not the most common of things, it happens. I had the same problem and that was the issue. I replaced the starter and it would not engage the flexplate and did exactly what you're describing.
