Default Cam issues w/pics

It's been a very long time since i've been on here. I recently decided to trade my 02 SS in on either a newer corvette or Challenger. Either way, I wanted to clean the SS up as it had been sitting for a while (exactly 42k miles on speedo). I spent a few hours cleaning it up and decided I couldn't get rid of it. Called the dealership and told them I couldn't do it. The very next day I took it out for a spin and I never drive it hard. I heard a ticking, took it apart with the help of a good friend and found one of the lifters had busted apart. Took the engine out and took it to a very reputable racing engine builder in my area and after tearing it apart he showed me the cam and expressed to me that it was in fact the cam, not the lifter, that was faulty. I'm attaching pics of the cam to get some of your opinions before I post what he said the issue was. Let me know what you guys think.....

Pitting on a cam is never good. Now the question should be, what was the cause of that. If I were you I'd replace the cam and lifters just to be safe.

I’m going to guess that the engine builder told you that because it’s a cam ground by Comp, that’s why it failed.

My engine builder is actually a Comp cam authorized dealer and distributor. He did say that it seems as though the cam wasn't heat treated properly since there is literally damage on every single lobe. The cam was installed 8 years ago but the damage happened at precisely the 42k mile mark. I called Comp cams and, of course, was told there was only a 12 month warranty so I ordered another.

I've seen other threads on this, and when I yanked my motor last winter after 16 years running an old comp cam, it looked like that. Leading theories are usually incorrect valvetrain setup or springs rated for much higher lift than the cam really needed. Cam quality control can be a cause too. In my case, being naive when I swapped to AFR heads that have a thicker deck, I reused the same pushrods that originally came with the cam kit, and I think they were probably too short for that geometry. Still ran that way for 50k miles without wiping out a lifter.

Good old Comp Cams.

If I were you I would order from Cam Motion instead. Granted supposedly Comp has fixed this issue but that doesn't help any of us who dealt with the time and expense of their failures ( as you just learned). It was very common.

cam motion and texas speed both make nice cams. I would buy from them! Yes you will need new lifters too.

Another vote for Cam Motion or Texas Speed... I’m not sure how many miles you had on that cam but after I pulled my Texas Speed cam (to go with smaller cam) with 10k miles it still looked like new and all the lobes looked near perfect...

Why would it be too soft?

Wrong alloy or wrong heat treating
