I just changed my oil for the first time in my ls3 since purchasing it, and I found two pieces of metal resting atop of the filter after taking it off. I’ve never seen anything like them before. They’re not shavings or jagged pieces, but very smooth diamond shaped pieces, for lack of a better description. Posting a pic now, has anyone seen something like this before?
Just a basic tear down of the top end. Heads off, cleaned everything up, new gaskets, dod delete, cam swap etc. Nothing out of the ordinary, donor engine came from a Camaro. No metal shavings in the oil pan either, just the usual metallic paste on the tip of the magnet.
Definitely looks like the metal blasting material.
The engine just went through a basic dod delete... heads off, new lifters, cam, gaskets etc. I’ve never seen the process of “shot peening”, do those pieces seem related to the process?
Some machine shops when rebuilding a bare block will heat it to about 450 degrees to burn all the carbon deposits off then put them in a cabinet and shot blast them with steed shot. this stress relieves the block and makes it better for the machining that follows. The shot s normally flushed out when the block is vatted. Some shops vat them a second time after machining further removing foriegn objects, With all that I have still found shavings etc when I hand clean the block prior to assembly. If it wa a DOD engine some of the needles from a failed lifter( generally the reason for deleting) circulating through the engine oil pump etc and deformed them to the shape you see, just thinking out loud, I hope you find the culprit.

This makes more sense than anything I’ve been able to come up with so far. I’ll reach out to the shop, if for no other reason than to inform them of an erroneous process. Luckily my engine is running fine and is not damaged. Thank you!
Still scary to think those were in your block. Makes you wonder how many more are in there.
Ugh I know. Going to change my oil again and see what else turns up. Fingers crossed these were an anomaly and I don’t have any more ticking time bombs floating around in my block
