Nothing, it's just what was designated for this particular engine. Just like WS6 doesn't stand for anything. It's just an rpo code that let's you know of the WS6 "package".

Yeah, people often ask what LT1/LT4/LS1/LS6/LS2/LS7/LS4 stands for and it's more or less an RPO code name that was given to each engine. Just like the Z28, WS6, Z06, S10, etc. There are really not meaning behind the names, more or less they are just RPO codes. Hope this helps.

z28 means- Z is the package, 2 doors, 8 cylinders.. SS is super sport and RS is rally sport, as for pontiac well... i dont know what to tell you about those guys

z28 does not stand for 2 door 8 cyl. it is an rpo code.

(Z06) = Z package, 0 cars beating you, 6 car lengths on the average cobra.
(Z24) = Z package, 2 doors, 4 car lenghts on a Neon.

etc... you can make up the rest..

That could be possible that they did that a while ago but then it kinda turned into just RPO codes. kinda like how chevy puts SS on everything now a days
