Default Top speed for an ls1

I searched the forum, and google a bit for what my 99 SS should top out at, and found on a site that 155 is the top speed... i dont see how that is true, i hit 140 last night, and was only at about 3000 rpms in sixth gear? when does the speed limiter kick in??? and how fast will the car go with out the speed limiter? it has to be able to get at least 170 right??

I'm pretty sure I remeber reading many years back that the factory speed limiter is set to 163mph from the factory with Z-rated tires.

Yeah, when I had the stock 3.42s in I hit 155. I was right at red-line in 5th gear, and still had 6th to go, but the Speedo only goes to 155 so I shut it down after that. I've seen other places that it is around 162-163

Speed limiter is at 162 if your car came with Z-rated tires (you obviously have them since your car did not stop at 118).

Like the others have said it's right around 162-163 mph. I've personally tested that out.

Thats what I was thinking, I always thought 6th was just for cruising, I think its hard on the tranny going that fast in 6th?

But what if you have steeper gears? Theoretically, you will reach a higher top speed with 3.42's than you would with, let's say, 4.11's. But with the 4.11's, wouldn't that put less strain on your motor/trany and allow you to reach a higher speed?

I ask because I now have 4.11's, and my car pulls hella hard in sixth compared to the original 3.42's...

Also, what about the 'Vettes? Are the speed limiters raised in them? We used to have a '99 convertible, and we had it up to 165 with the top down. At that point, it was like an F5 tornado, so we had to shut down. We never did it again due to how scary it was with the top down, so we never reached the limiter. It was an A4 by the way...

with steeper gears you get to your power band quicker. it also lowers your top speed. look at where first/second/even third gear runs out now compared to where it was stock.

and yes top speed is usually done in fifth gear. sixth is for cruising. at least that's what i've always read on here.

if i remember correctly the areodynamics of a f-body limits it to about 170, unless you have enough power to push through it. and it will take quite a while to get that fast.

My car came with Z-rated tires... it was electronically governed to 160mph.
I've never driven that fast, but that's what I see here:

I reflashed mine and manually set my speed limiter up to 170. Apparently 170 is the max for an f-body ls1.

I've had mine going 160mph in 5th with 3.42s, felt like it had a little more but I was also running out of rpm. The fastest mine will go is 122mph in 6th, just doesn't have the power to push the car faster with that 0.5:1 6th gear.

Been to 135 on my 245/50/16's (5th) thanks to tuning. Dont think I'll go any higher than that unless I get better wheels/tires.

I've been to the limiter when i had my 2.73's, just past the end of the speedo. Now it will only do 135 in 3rd w/ the 3.42's. There are some guys who do open road racing on here, can't remember their screen names though. I'm sure they would know.

Yeah, you can't do it in 6th. Just too tall of a gear unless you have major mods. Not sure how 4.11s would change that though.

As others have said, the speed limiter is around 162. With that removed, maybe 170 at red line(in 5th). I've been close to 160 myself.
