As to "35% oil life" thats a load of crap. Synthetic oil gets the SAME amount of filth in it as regular, it just retains its chemical properties longer, still the same contaminants though, I say change it!

I use a quart in a little less than 3000 mi but I'm using breathers also if that matters. I was using this much before nitrous also and compression looks fine also right now. I dont care though, this motor is temporary anyways.

I can go 6000 miles, driving it like I stole it and don't use a drop. For precautions I did the vertical pcv mod but even before that it never used any. Intake is completely clean. I do have the LS6 block. I'm wondering if that helps with oil consumption at all. Don't know.

I used Castrol GTX in my S10 4.3L I bought it new and always used GTX every 3K miles. I sold it after buying the Formula, the S10 had 231,000 miles on it when I sold it and I seen it running around town 2 years after I sold it.
I have 124,000 on the Formula and I ordered it new and have used Castrol Syntec since it had 800 miles on it. I change it every 5K miles and don't use any oil between changes. It did use 1/2 a quart last summer going from Ohio to SoCal but I was running 85 mph all day in the desert in 109* temps.

GTX isnt a "bad" oil imho, but I can only speak from experiences I had. When I put Rotella T in there it sure cleaned out a lot of crap that GTX had formed/left behind. Then again, Rotella T is going to just about out-clean anything out there. My dad has torn down dozens of high mileage motors that he has run different oils in (from Amsoil to quaker state) and far and away the ones with the LEAST sludge were the Rotella T filled one's. He put around 200K miles on avg. on the motors (HARD miles, they were X cop cars that he used for escort cars). The worst, by far, were quaker state filled. Amsoil and M1 he said did well, but no better than the Rotella T and the cost was staggering compared to Rotella. I look at it this way, if Rotella T can handle running cross country in a big-rig turbo deisel without breaking down, it can handle any car's turbo, NA, juice, whatever. Another thing to note is that IIRC Rotella T has VERY high zinc numbers...(unless they have changed the formula)

my '01 SS was at one point burning 1qt every 1k miles.... at 64k miles, #1 rod snapped due to a completely seperate issue, so i guess its not a concern for me anymore... an '03 LS6 is going in.

Pennzoil uses a wax base instead of an ash base.... so while all conventional oils leave some filmy build up, Pennzoils build up is like a thick gooey wax. over tens of thousands of miles, even with proper regular oil changes, you will find a waxy buildup inside the motor... this buildup is much thicker and nastier looking then the buildup from ash base oils.... the good fully syn oils tend to leave no buildup.. only a golden moly coating everywhere.
anyhoo, on the original topic:
the ring fix was because vette owners were getting ring flutter from low load, high RPM situations... (and that caused oil consumption)... think 2nd gear, 45mph roll racing and you get the idea.
at the time, GMs testing, while through, did not include this type of useage..... after finally figuring the problem/reason out, they redesigned the ring package... and problem solved..
it was fixed during 01 production... so some 01s have it.. all 02s do.
the oil usage/ring flutter problem is very dependant on driving style.
some people have the old stuff and use no oil... others have the new stuff and still sip oil more then normal.
some is the driver, some is from factory tolerances, some is from maintenance history... there's no way of knowing anything about a specific car from a poll.. only generalized trends.

I have only put about 1200 hard miles on my car since I have owned it. I have yet to use a drop of oil. Now I did buy the GC 0-30 which will soon be replaced since the LSx tick (sounds like it is about to explode) is worse than when the orig owner (personal friend) used Mobil 1 10-30. I will go with the BMW Castrol 5-30 since itwill cost me nothing.

I used to waste 1 quote every 3 thousand miles, sometimes in a few less miles do to driving habit. I switched oils to valvoline and seen improvement, now depending on driving habit its about 1/4 to half every 3 thousand miles. At the same time i also changed oil filters since people said the frame filters are no good, so i have since changed to mobil 1 premium filter and my oil compression is higher every since changing to the mobil 1. My compression used to be be a bit over half when i first bought the car, and at wot it would go almost all the way to the max, then after thousand miles later, the compression went down, untill i changed to the mobil 1 fileter.

I don't have a '01 or '02, but my A4 'bird has 127,700+ miles on it and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
