Unless your car is a 98 that temp guage is useless, just so you know.

ya our temp guages suck they are soo off. my hptuners told me my car was at 230 but my guage in the dash said 210 lol , but i let mine sit for like 2 min. its always smart to let the car warm up before you go.

You want to drive it ASAP so you don't have time to dilute your engine oil with condensation build-up. If you have a stock t-stat then it's not such a big deal as most of the condensation build-up in the oil is cooked off but with most of us running 160 stats, it's a good idea to get in, start it, let it build oil presssure for a minute and then drive keeping RPM below 3000 until oil temp is up to 150 or so. This will also increase the longevity of your valve springs.

i usually ping the engine at 6000rpm for about 2 min then floor in reverse out of the parking lot and then do 2 brake stands to warm the drivetrain and tires it seems to get that tick out of the engine!

Ditto. Never thought of the condensation but with the valve springs and lift I have in mine, I make sure I don't get on it before it reaches normal operating temps. Usually a 20-30 sec. startup and then keep revs high enough to just move car and nothing more until warm.

My son comes home from high school and tells of this ricer that gets in his car, fires it up and revs it till it bounces off the limiter. He then proceeds to rev the engine till he leaves the school. The next day my son says he did it again and you should see the smoke. I asked what color? The next day my son say Blue! This went on for about two more weeks. Now my son says he's still not seen the car yet! HAHA Stupid Ricers!!

I let the car warm up till it finds idle. Then drive easy to let the drivetrain parts warm too. In cold weather (below 20) I always drive easy. There's less wear on the gears.

what also helps is if you turn the car on then off then on then off. it activates the single discharge capacitor in the engine data configureation managment accumulator. which in turn compresses the overall simualtion SAS heater.....heating the engine and other major parts

comon just turn the damn car on and let it sit for a couple of seconds!!!!! then drive and dont floor it for a bit

I usually have to wait a minute or so for my car to find a decent idle. It's not a daily-driver, so it's no big deal...

As I'm turning the motor over, I throw it in drive and mash the pedal down and go WOT. I shut the door as I catch traction. I do this everywhere I go.

Good, i was just making sure that when i started it up in the morning and do my usual burnouts down the street that im not going to wreck anything.......................................j/k

But seriously i guess that i should have nothing to worry about as long as i dont beat on it right away when i start it up. My daily routine is to start it at 7:18-19 and leave at 7:20 and take the 5 min drive to school and then shut it down. Or if im in a hurry i atleast let the RPM's drop.

I'm sure condensation builds up in it from the short drives, but thats why i take it for a 15-20 mile drive on the weekends.

Thanks for the help guys.

I just give it about 30 seconds and then start driving and let the rear-end, transmission warm up.

prolonged idle does not expand the rings and lets gas into the oil. On my daily driver, I give it just enough time to turn the radio down from the night before andturn the heater down so it isn't blowing cold air at me. Then it goes into drive and off to work we go

Man some of this stuff is just outrageous...

Few things to point out... Our cars in mostly stock form are nothing close to supercars or anything of the sort, they are just cars and they were designed to be driven by GM. When I say this I dont mean start your car and start reving it high (back in High School there was a kid with a 68 Camaro who would do that, funny thing was he was in Automotive... Shows what that program taught) but could you see yourself explaining to a passenger "oh we gotta wait here for a few minutes, gotta let the engine warm up... otherwise it might break".

I usually start it up, turn on my lights (have to use lights all day here), adjust my seat if I have to, buckle up, etc... and then keep the engine below 2k until its warm. (knock on wood)

With karts or small formulas, they are "warmed up" by doing small bursts of throttle and gradually increasing the rpm.
