Fluid Change in a 440T4 Front Drive Car
I have a front wheel drive 1988 Pontiac 6000. The car has 112,000 miles on it, and the trans fluid appears to be the original. It is starting to turn orange. I bought a new filter for the trans, and two gallons of Dextron/Mercon II or whatever its called. Should I drop the pan and install the new filter, or have this trans professionally flushed. I heard from somebody that the old fluid could mix with the new and cause problems, and I also heard that if I drop the pan and replace all the lost fluid it will be fine. Symptoms of bad fluid include occasional bucking while the converter is locked, and of course the fluid being orange. I have an occasional smell that smells like a paint booth in an autobody shop, but I dont know if that is trans related. Also, the TCC solenoid appears to buzz for ten seconds when I shut the car off.

i had an 89 olds 88 with the 440T4 and dropped the pan to do a filter and fluid change and about a week later the trans decided it was going to have a really hard 1-2 shift
with transmissions you either need to do fluid changes religiously or not at all
by the way that transmission had a flush at 90,000 and then it had 145,000 on it when i did the flush that caused the tranny to go to hell
the condition of the tranny was already crap the old fluid was covering up the apparent 1-2 clutch pack slip and when new fluid was added it was obvious it was junk be careful
