skipping gears is not hard on the trans whatsoever if you do it correctly. The gears in our cars are so close together that skipping doesnt hurt anyhting.

in my 3.23 a4, i get a little over 22-23mpg highway (85-90mph average). in my v6 3.42 a4 i was getting something like 21-22. in the city i get 1.5mpg less with the LS1 though.

I usually go through all the gears, but sometimes I go 1-3-5-6. That way I don't feel like I'm bogging the motor down too bad, especially with the 3.89s.

1. No jack rabbit take-offs and keep it in the highest gear possible without bogging the engine down.

2. I also keep my tire pressure at 35 PSI even though it calls for 30.

3. My air/fuel filters are replaced regularly.

4. Not giving into temptation to out-run every SUV, P/U, mini van, and import that blows by me while I'm granny shifting.


Most of my driving is in the city and my car goes 1 1/2 weeks between fill-ups.

Downside to keeping the rpm's low is that if I want to quickly jump in front of somebody I can't without down shifting. Secondly, with the higher-than-normal tire pressure, I have absolutely zero traction in 1st gear. Oh well.

I had mine at 35 psi, traction was such a joke. Now they are at 30, thankfully. (I still have poor traction)

I notice that when I ride with other people that I drive slow in town. And take it easy on starts and shifting while keeping rpms lower. Then all that extra work goes out the window when I meet a stang.

i do the 1-3-5-6 on take offs and when down shifting i use 5-4-2 depending on what i wanna do. i get about 15mi/gal but i can never go through a full tank w/out getting on it. on my road trip i was getting 28-30mi/gal with the mods in my sig

I drive around town mainly and I got he car to drive not to save gas I have another car for that.. but around city its probably in the teens like 15mpg or so driving normally i shift below 2k on everything 1st - 4th then shift below 2k. Highway it does like 2k rpms at 90mph..so highway is obviously fine

I personally go 1-3-5-6, or 1-4-5-6. Depending on how im feeling.

I go 1 thru 5 in town and use 6th if the road I'm on has long streches between traffic lights/stop signs or on the highway.

Around town if I'm approaching an intersection that has a red light or stop sign - I shift to neutral and simply coast towards the intersection as opposed to downshifting.

if i feel like skipping gears i go 1-3-5-6 because like what was previously stated it seems to bog the motor less and going from 1-4 is just rediculous in my oppinion but doing that i can usually get about 220 miles per tank running around in town and on the highway cruising at 70-80 i've gotten 27-29 which i definitely cant complain with, getting 350 miles to a tank with the lt1's smaller gas tank is definitely not something to complain about either

I saw on tv today that running your A/C can cost you 5-25% of your mpg. True?

How about starting in 2nd gear, I never do it, is it bad to do?

I just go through the gears normally. In town i'm usually in 4th gear at about 35-40 mph. 5th gear if it's 45-50. Sometimes if i'm getting on the highway or something I'll go straight from 4th to 6th.

In 6th gear at 60 mph i'm sitting at about 1200-1300 rpms, so my gas mileage is usually pretty good. In town if i'm actually trying to save gas, i'll shift out of 1st in the 2200ish range(need to get rid of skip shift). Usually i'm not so I Just go through the gears rather quickly at about 2500-3000 rpm.

Full tank seems to be somewhere in the 250ish mile range, and that's with a few WOTs and normal driving.

Just got back from a 315 mile trip, probably 80% (75-80MPHish) highway and 15% town, and 5% messing around and got an average of 25.2MPG. 90 miles of this was headon with 30mph winds from this shitty weather in MI.

i know a lot of people say to start in 2nd to get good mileage. i know a killer combo for MPG is 2-4-5/6 (city) depending on type of road.

I usually do something like 1-2-4-5 around town or 2-3-4-5 if I start on any kind of down slope. Not much trouble with 4.11s.
