Should I mod the Z-28 or buy a Vette?
I have been trying to sell my 2001 Z-28 (35,000 miles) for about 4 weeks now to buy a Vette, but it won't sell (KBB is about $12K wholesale and the dealer offered me $7500). I refuse to give the car away, so I may decide to mod the car instead. I can get the Vette at invoice minus my $1000 GM bonus card dollars, which is about $41K (2008 LS3), but I'm concerned the other hidden costs (special jacks, run-flat tires, speed bumps, etc.)
If I mod the Z-28, I won't get a penny back in the mods, as you guys well know. So, it's a one-way street. The car is immaculate. The C6 does the quarter in 12.2. Mine does it in 13.3. This is an emotional decision, as I have the money, but the $32K difference is a big step. If I wait much longer, it will be winter, or should I just wait it out? Here's my baby:

Check out this thread. I run the same quarter mile time (13.30 at 110 MPH) untuned. Here are the mods: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...59#post7520659. The car is getting dyno tuned on Tuesday. I'll post the graph in that thread tonight.
I am currently planning a cam swap and valvetrain upgrades that will put the car between 400-420 RWHP. Similar set-ups locally have run 11.80-12.00 at the strip.
Total cost for headers/exhaust/air lid/throttle body/intake manifold was under $1300. You already have an LS6 intake manifold and could port your own throttle body and modify the stock air lid to bring the cost down to around $800-$900. This bolt-on only set-up should be around 350 RWHP after the tune.
The parts for the cam swap (camshaft, dual springs, chromoly pushrods, titanium retainers, ported oil pump, double roller timing chain, gaskets) can be had for under $900. Install costs vary from about $500-$700. Tuning varies from about $300-$500.
So here is the breakdown:
full bolt-ons/free mods: $800
cam/valvetrain parts: $900
tuning: $400 (average)
install: $600 (average)
Total cost is only $2700 and that is if you have a shop install the cam. If you install it yourself it brings the cost to around $2100. Just over $2k for a 400-420 RWHP set-up that will run 11.8-12.0.
P.S. Those figures are assuming you can install your own bolt-ons.

I would hold on trying to sell the car. I'm trying to sell mine as well going on 2-3 weeks here and not a serious bite. Lots of people seem to be selling right now but no one is buying, it's just bad timing. I think you'd get easily $10k at least for your car. A dealer will never give you what you're hoping to get b/c they want to make their profit as well.
It all comes down to the issue of time. I'm in no rush to sell mine so I'll sit on it until winter before I start losing it. Seems like you're not really in a rush either, correct me if I'm wrong. It seems like stock ones are few and far but I think people actually do want them. You definitely won't see the money you put into it again if you mod it.
The z would be fun modded but if you really want a Vette, stick out the sale. Good luck with selling it, hopefully the market picks up a bit here...

I would give you 10 grand for that car tomorrow. How well have you taken care of it? It's beautiful. Shoot me a pm, maybe we can work something out. Willing to trade for an LT1?

I would keep the A4 Camaro before I gave it away to some jackleg at the Chevy place for way less than its worth. I would keep the Camaro until somebody that really wants a great car at a reasonable price comes along. I still haven't seen any new Camaros on the lot yet so I'd say you still have the upper hand ,if you don't blow it by trading in your car because you fell in love with some Vette somewhere. They probally already know somebody chompping at the bit to get your car if you traded in. All you got to do is wait, don't stir up to much of a racket when your on the lot looking at the Vettes and make sure you got that Camaro looking like somebody just got thru detailing it and let the salesman know that before you'll give it away for $7500 that you would rather pop out the T-Tops and use it to burn trash in.

id really say it depends what your goal is for the car. If you want a drag car definatly keep the z. If you want a bad *** car to pull up to the club/bar in, and have fun in get a vette. I was going through this debate in my head for a long time. I was going back and fourth between c5/ta/z... I ended up with a ta because i got it for half the price of the vette. cheaper to mod, and the car is just set up better for strait line racing, and is a ton easier to work on. Id try to figure out what you want out of the car, and go from there. Either way you will have a bad *** car. good luck.
