Default How does the Oil Change indicator work?

What parameters make it come on? It can't be mileage or time because mine will come on then off then on and off (just started today and yes, it is due). Is there a sensor that samples oil purity? Optical sensor maybe to check clarity? Anyone?

You are living in a fantasy world! I believe it just works by tracking the number of miles since it was reset,as well as some driving habits and driving conditions that the computer senses. You can believe the one about an oil purity sensor if you want - that would be one hell of a sensor!

I was asking. I have no idea. I didn't think a purity sensor was it. If it's the mileage though, why doesn't it stay on steady?

It's called the GM oil life system, several factors play into when it illuminates - mileage, temps, driving habits, etc. - explained in the owners manual - can come on anywhere from 3-10K. Once it comes on it will for every ignition cycle on start up for a few seconds until it's reset. Since you're due for a change just reset it when you get it changed. Personally I don't use it, change mine by mileage.

That method works the same as the one in the owners manual, and doesn't reset the trip odo too. BTW if you need a manual http://shbox.com/pdf/manuals.html

To reset it, you put the key in the run position and hold in the trip reset for 12 sec. Read the owners manual.
