Default Go look at this 2000 SS 4 hours away, running lean?

Basically I am carless right now and there is a 2000 camaro ss, 6-speed, 27k miles for sale for $16.5k and theyve already basically said they would take 15k for it. Everything seems to be immaculate, but I was then told that the car had a check engine light on and that it was because the car was running lean. The car has had 3 owners, the first couldnt afford it and brought it back with 1k on the clock, the second traded it in with 8k on the clock to order an 02 SS, and this lady is selling it to help start off her business. She said the oil has been changed religiously and she hasn't been driving it because she had an operation and isn't allowed to push in a clutch yet. She also said that the car would get a "tune up" if I bought it to get rid of the check engine light. Obviously I would want a receipt of what was done because I don't want them just clearing the code on me and having it come back on. Anyways, the car is 4 hours away, should I bother going to look at it?

Hell yeah! Atleast go look at it and maybe you can get them to come down a little more. Either way thats not a bad price especially if they will fix the problem.

I'm just worried about the amount of owners and the fact that it was running lean. Couldn't there have been some massive damage done to the car if its been running lean?

It depends on how lean it is running and if it was beaten on while leaning out. It could just be a simple bad 02 or somthing small. If its unmolested, and has the factory tune Im sure its not a big deal. My car pulled lean codes when the left bank sensor 2 went bad while it was a factory pig.

Heck yeah go get it. Running lean is no big deal. Should be an easy fix especially if they are gonna fix it for you.

I'm really screwed, I have no car as of right now because I sold both of mine and my parents are arguing like crazy because I keep having to use my moms car. I have student teaching so I have to be there on time every single day for the next 15 weeks or so. It looks like its either gonna be this car or a "clunker" which I am afraid to get in case I break down or something like that.

at least look at it you can tell or have a mechanic tell if its been beaten on - the 3 owners might scare me away because you won't know its full history but if the price is right and if the condition is right there with the low miles then get it the lean part could just be spark plugs or an 02 sensor something small besides if you look and its not the "one" you'll know it and you can find another nice SS closer to you too they aren't unbelievably rare either good luck either way

first thing I look for when a car comes in for a lean code is for a vacumm leak. You don't know how much a car has been beat on no matter where you buy it from. Everybody says "never been beat on". They've all been beat on, who cares, we all take the chance when we buy a used car. With it being N/a I wouldn't worry about the lean condition very much. For that price I'd say its worth it with the mileage.

Well they seem to be rare near me with a 6speed, low miles, and in good shape. Oh yeah, and I want one thats is pretty much bone stock, so it's not that simple. Planty of A4's lurking around.

I say look at it... if you do I bet you come back with a low mile SS for 15k. DO IT.

chances are the engine is fine even if it is spitting out a lean code. once the computer sets a lean code those injectors go into to overdrive baby, its probably in reality running very rich because of an oxygen sensor reading lean.

If it is factory stock, the lean code (assuming she looked into it and not guessing) won't be a big deal....clean the MAF, new O2s, or Vacuum leak. minor stuff, and not very expensive. I would definitely go for it. looking at it in person will tell you just how "clean it is". AND, you will give your parents the benefit of 'you are at least trying to get a car' and not slacking off.

Where do you live? If its an area where you see snow I would say let the LS1 pass and look at something else that has awd/4wd. I loved my 98 z28 but im in massachusetts and we see tons of snow so I had to have two cars. The z28 then because a weekend/cruiser car and I rarely ever had a chance to drive it with work so def make sure it will be a viable daily driver for you. If you are down south or out west and have good weather year round go for it as they are very reliable vehicles. I put 30K miles on my z28 over a 4 year span of owning it and never had it break down at all. Only changed oil and did the basic maintainance so if it works for you as a DD then 15K is a good price with that mileage, but def play the lean codes off as you might be able to drop the price even lower. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

What color SS is this? Most would be worth that money, if it isn't hit. Good luck.

I would definitely look at it. If you're willing to pay ~$15k and possibly have this car for years to come, what's a 4 hour trip?

I was looking at the same car. Let me guess, its red ss with a weird steering wheel cover in NY. She told me the car was running weird.

think, you have an 8 hour round trip if your not happy with the car.

Yeah thats the car. What did she say to you about it? All she said to me was that the check engine light was on and that the car was supposively running lean.

I'm guessing it hasn't been beaten on. Even if it has, those are low miles.
I'd say you'll be safe, definitely sounds like a good deal to me.
