Default F-Body 102amp Alternator Question

Well, I was reading and searching about this, our cars came with a 102 amp alternators, and somehow common sense would tell me its not enough for all the equipment our cars have, like in trans ams, where everything is almost power. Since the prevoius engine, the LT1 had a 140 amp from factory starting in late 1994.... I was wondering if anybody had done something to correct this. I see the way how the LS1 differs in mounting positions of that of 4.8L,5.3L,6.0L which all sit up top of engine and most are 110-130 amps. Ours sit on driver side, down low. Can any other stock alternator from any of these other engines be put in a LS1 f-body? Has anybody put a stock but higer amp alternator in theirs? Thanks in advance for all inputs.

Mine reads at the orange zone in the gauge when I am at a stop, such as waiting for a light to change from red to green, as soon as you start driving again, gauge would read normal to half gauge and a little more. Is it common in f-bodies then?

I think only the cars with the police package got the 140 amper. I could be wrong to, though.

I am very interested in this. Mine doesn't go into the orange, it reads normal. When driving at night with the lights on when I hit the brakes and the brake lights light my dash flickers a little. These little 102 amp units just arn't enough, especially with a stereo.

I don't think its bad, it works good as long as the car is moving, or at idle in parking, but if its in drive, sitting still, it reads in the orage part of gauge. Must be the the fan settings, got them reprogrammed when I replaced the stock thermostat with a 160 degree, now they turn on frequently.

I just found a listing of different brand alternators with a powermaster alternator having the most at 200amps. Here is the site:

I heard that even if those are 200 amps, at idle they return normal amperage... is it true?

I'm not sure....I would think it would add more at idle and all the way across the rpm range. But again I have no idea so don't take my word for it...lol
