Default Starter totalled my block

I started up the car and heard the starter grinding and i knew what had happened because its happened to me before. i unbolted the starter and sure enough, two chunks of metal dropped out. One piece came off from the starter, and the other came off the block which i had previously jbwelded when this happened before.

Its being jbwelded as we speak but im not holding my breath, so i think im looking at finding a new block. I figure i'll just buy a new shortblock and transfer the other stuff to that engine. Should i stick with a 346 or a 383 so that i can keep my current heads and whatnot? Or do i bite the bullet and go with a 402 and replace eeevvvverything. I dont know what to do, im depressed, i had just paid off all my credit cards too

Any ideas?

If you can comfortably afford it, stroke it. But if youre pretty happy with your current combination, then just keep it stock cubes. Not having a debt over head sure is nice!

How big is the chunk that was broke off?

If you can find a REALLY good machine shop, it can be fixed. A friends dad, Mike, works for Rhyne Racing in gary,in. He repaired his dart aluminum block that had a huge chunk missing were a rod went threw. So, if you find someone who knows what they are doing, it can be fixed.

The piece that broke off the block split right up the middle of the threads.....its gonna be a tough fix. this happened maybe a year ago and the jbweld held it until now. im not sure if its gonna hold it again now.

Also i dont know if you can weld through jbweld, so im not sure how that would work

Did you make sure the area where the JB Weld was applied was extremely clean? No dampness, oil, road grime, dirt, etc? Did you use the original or quick set-up formula?

I'm pretty sure it can be fixed. wither they have to drill and tap it out.. or enlarge the hole slightly... it can be done and wont leave you stranded somewhere. As far as welding through jb... they would take it off and clean it all up.... good luck

The chunk that was taken out of the block was along the pan rail. It was maybe 3-4 inches long. He repaired it, and it looked as if it never happened. The engine is an all aluminum 434 dart thats in an aero coupe monte. Takes it to the track and sprays it. Not one leak or issues with it.

im not sure if theres anywhere close by that does that sorta work....

advanced auto gave me a new starter, so thats good. I cleaned everything off again and am going to hit it liberally with the jbweld and see if i can at least make it last until i figure out what to do.

I'd get just a bare block, but i dont feel like swapping all the internals. so im thinking of getting a short block, and i'd like to stroke it, that way at least i'll be all forged once this is all said and done
