Default A4 Shifting

I have a 2000 Trans Am with the stock automatic transmission, so I read PND321. I know a guy with an A4 Z28(unsure of year, 1998-2002)who reads PN(O)DD321.

My question is, how does my overdrive work? If I'm racing from a roll, should I manually shift to keep the transmission from having to shift from overdrive to a lower gear?

Some will say keep it in drive or whatever. Ive raced my auto car for 3 years now.

Leave it in OD. Theres no point to shift yourself. Ive tested it at the track, D was slower than my OD by at least 2 tenths. Only retards try to powershift a 4L60E.

Prnd321 = Prn(o)d21

P = P
R = R
N = N
D = Od
3 = D
2 = 2
1 = 1

If I remember correctly, the earlier 4th-gen f-body A4 said Prn(o)d21, while the later 4th-gen f-body said Prnd321. I don't know when it switched, but my 2001 Formula says Prnd321.

EDIT: Damn text filters keep lower casing my text.

If you can select 1st gear with an auto you have 3.23's. If you have only 2 you have 2.73's

Camaros have OD, D, 2, 1 and 'Birds have D, 3, 2, 1. They mean the same thing....I prefer the Pontiac setup.

it's the difference between a pontiac and a chevy. chevy's have Od-D-2-1 while pontiacs go d-3-2-1

not true. my car came with 2.73's and i could select either 1st or 2nd and it wouldnt shift from that gear, under any condition.

to the OP: just let the car shift itself unless you are having traction problems and its causing the car to shift up before you are ready. in that case, yeah you might want to manually shift it, but it takes practice to learn how to do it right.

if you want to shift it yourself, get the transmission that allows you to do that... all the time!

I don't "want" to shift it myself...I was just wondering if that'd make me quicker from a roll.

Thanks for all the replies. :-)

Chevy had OD, D, 2, 1. Pontiac had D, 3, 2, 1.

This is ONLY true in the LT1 years. For the LS1s, the 2.73 cars come with exactly the same shift selector as the 3.23 cars.

No problem.

My '99 Z28 had 3.23s, and my '98 & '02 Z28s have 2.73s, yet they all have the ability to be shifted back to 1st gear manually, and they all have the "OD, D, 2, 1" gear selector pattern.

I shift mine manually or just start out in 3rd. It feels like it will upshift quicker in Drive(OD) if not at full throttle and it won't rev high enough to get it to the sweet spot in the powerband. If shifting manually watch out for the rev limiter. First time i hit it it puckerd me up a bit!
