I CANT DECIDE!!! Boost VS H/C
I finally have enough money to boost my z28..... And now that the time has come, I just cant decide if I want to boost it, or go H/C on it....
Every one! Help me decide!
If I go heads cam, I know the bottom end will be a little more happy with me... And is a bit more budget friendly, also, having everything up top fresh is a plus...
Boosting it WILL make nice power gains, might hurt my bottom end, have to be careful, but the ability to take boost away and add it as needed is very cool. The summers here can be all most 130 degrees some days, Daily driving the car in turbo trim might not be a good idea... But I have ALLWAYS wanted to go that route! And I'll make more power than H/C too...
There are so many pro's and con's to them, the decision is not as easy as I thought it was going to be, now that I am in a position to actually make a decision, and go forth, I cant even sleep! Lol. I have read post after post, horror stories, not, from both sides....
Every one, chime on in, help me make my decision, I want to make reliable power with a stock bottom end.

i was thinking about doing boost but when it came down to it i went stroker. there was no way my motor would have held the power that i want for a very long time. i figure if i ever wanna go boost i already have a forged motor and can just change some things out.
if i were u i would go head and cam setup. i love hearing the sound of a car that is just sitting there cammn. either choice u make would be cool though

Lol, boosted H/C would be cool..... Forged, boosted, H/C would be the ****, unfortunately, all of it is out of my range. I think I would "trust" an H/C set up more, but, after some research, it seems that most heads/cam cars put down 450 hp range.... I was thinking a bit higher than that, and I know that boost would be the way to go.... Then again, I could just spray on top of an H/C set up..... GAH!!

Its like hit or miss, with an H/C car making 480hp range it seems, unless you run a fast 90/90 and that adds nearly a grand to the mix.... I guess when it all boils down to it, for roughly 3500 I can boost my car.... And for the same I can go H/C/I and sell my LS6 intake, and make good power, cammin' like a ****...

i doubt you'll put 480 to the tires with just a heads&cam. but that's the route i would go. and then down the road i would boost it. heads&cam&boost would be a pretty nasty combo. well over 500 rwhp. or if you're willing to spend a little extra money, you could buy a low compression bigger cube shortblock. remember the bottom end on an engine like that will tolerate boost and the power you could make would be retarted, turbo or blower.

FI>NA.
I just think it's so cool that you can put a turbo/supercharger on your car and retain good fuel economy when driving around town not making boost. That's the big seller IMO - with a good H/C package, you're gonna have a sub-15mpg gas guzzler in a lot of cases. You can still put down 500rwhp with boost and get good fuel economy.

I would go H/C first. I want a boosted car so bad, but get the top end done first. It'll be a lil cheaper that a boosted setup so you can always save sum money after doing the top end and boost later. That way you can have it tuned, running more boost, and being happier overall. I love a healthy H/C car. Just my opinion..

I have a heads cam car now making mid 400s to the ground 560s with the bottle.I say go boosted that is what I am going to do you keep a descent idle and drivability.when you do h/c you lose alot of that even with a good tune.you can always build the bottom end later.

I think you also need to consider the supporting mods with both, like suspension, fuel system, the 10 bolt won't last very long if you are launching hard. Just lots of other nick-nacks that go along with it. I'm not sure how much a "budget" boost setup would run as I have not attempted that yet. I'm sure that'd be a good budget for a H/C car though.

go boost. get some cheap 317 heads to drop compression and then you can change the top end, and throw a z06 cam that someone will sell for about 50 bucks and have a sweet set up.

Like the guyn above said...
There isn waaay more to it than just slapping a FI set-up on....He said he has $3500???? That needs to have about $3k more added to it for a good set-up..
Then you have suspension, fuel, that 10-bolt will break and so on.

Yeah I was wondering that as well, what turbo setup are you going to run for $3500? But I vote boost>h/c
