Default Inspection Quest!

So, before you start flaming me, this isn't a thread about finding a location to inspect my car under the table. This is a thread about me finding out how I can get my car to the legal bar as cheap as possible.

Here are my set backs:

1. (2x) O2 Sensor Codes
2. (1x) EGR Code
3. No cats
4. No EGR
5. Exhaust is dumped before the rear axle.

I have just replaced the water pump as it was cracked and leaking rapidly. I don't have any of my original parts due to rust.

I imagine I can get some O2 sims and some high flow cats to work with the long tubes. What do I do about EGR?

Does your state have a sniffer?
Also are you throwing any lights or codes?

That is the key question. If its a visual inspection, just get the codes turned off and you should be fine.

I have codes that need to be taken care of. They check for cats.

get it tuned to delete the rear o2, egr, air..if you just get those codes deleted it is going to cost anywhere from free to $100....if they do a sniffer test then you will have to get cats and possibly a catback, unless you know someone cool that can just push it through and slap a sticker on it...this is why i keep my stock headers/y/catback...once a year i put the set-up bto and get tested

Well you dont want the codes just to be "deleted" if the tuner does it right he will make your car run correctly with the thing that was throwing the code so that it doesnt throw it anymore. (Hope that made sence)

It is going to depend on your specific location. I know here in NY they plug in a laptop and look for codes/check emission readings. They also do a very complete visual inspection. This causes several problems:

1). No codes can be thrown and cams must be in the 224/224 range or smaller.

2). There must be cats. No cats = fail.

3). No exhaust leaks. If they see no muffler or the exhaust doesn't exit out the back via tail pipes then you fail.

Now that's just going by the book. If the guy doing the inspection REALLY knows his stuff then he would know LT headers are illegal because they relocate the cats. Not everyone will know where the cats are supposed to be so some inspecters pass and others fail.

It sucks but having a highly modified car means finding ways to buck the system sometimes. You really need to find a performance shop or local fbody owners and find out where the "friendly" testing station/inspector is.

Good luck.

Well I'm in TX you can get away with LTs. For my year, 2000, you can go without 2 O2 sensors and still pass. I think all I need to do now is extend a pipe past the rear axle and get some cheap high flow cats. I think I saw some on ebay for $50 a piece.

I got all of the codes fixed though. I was driving to class the other morning and my car was billowing smoke. There is a coolant leak (cracked head methinks) so it burns quite a bit of coolant and spews smoke. I drove right past a cop and when I stopped the smoke caught up with me and covered my car and the cop car. He didn't even look twice. My inspection has been out for a year and my registration is out. I am fixing it this weekend though. It's been fun.
