You should try Auto Auctions. You might be able to find an LS1 that is a repo. That's the only way i could see you finding an LS1 for 5grand. Auction or a wrecked car which wouldn't be worth it since you would have to put more money into it. Good Luck!!

lt1 cars are going for around 5k here, but most going that price have a ton of mileage. I may be biased towards 3rd gens, but I'd get a base model rs for around 2500, use the rest towards a ls1 engine/trans combo. If you nickle and dime some stuff you can get a sound car with an ls1 for around 6 or 7k.

i dont think you would have anything less than a grand just in labor. you also gotta find a shop that can machine and sleave an aluminum block. a place that can do it right is far and few.

i got my 99 ss m6 for 5500. it had 125k miles on it when i got it, but it was owned by the same lady that drove it since 32k miles when she bought it. its also a salvaged title, but i havent had any major problems with it. ...other than a fuel pump going out because it ran out of gas, and now a power sterring pump, but thats it. and i took it to the track and ran a 13.6 my first try. i know its not great, but it was my first time and the car was only like 5k. if you are patient, you can find one.

man that is gonna be a bit of a challange to find a LS1 car for that kind of money...in any condition. Like most people have said for $7,500 to $8,500 you can find some really good cars. I just picked up a nice '99 Z28 in that price range. It's a good car and will make a good driver...something that I don't plan to mod on as heavily as the two SS'. If you are planning to run the car at the track and have some fun on the street, I would save a little more green and get a car that is a better starting point. In the long run that would be the better move if you have convinced yourself that the LS1 is the way to go. If not, get out ther and find the LT1 in your budget.

I know you all find it hard to believe turns out the lady was selling it for her uncle from mexico the car was bought here in laredo at a local pontiac turns out the guy bought cars here and sold them over in mexico this one never made it and he used it only when hed come down since the guy was a pilot. Well i took the Trans Am to get checked at a local shop for a friend to look at it he checked everything it did need fluids but other then that he said the danm things was basicly new and asked me how much she was asking for the car she started at 14,000 i lowered her to 12 . Then me and my father talked her down even more to 10 till finally she said the lowest was 9 i was freaking out man i mean this car was almost brand new, IT STILL SMELLED NEW even though it had been sitting outside with a tarp over it. But trust me guys its a Trans Am hard to believe i know but u should of seen my face the day i got her : ever since then its been a kick @$$ ride and i love it .

You get what you pay for. A $5000 LS1 is going to be a piece of ****. Wait about 4 more years.
