I would look at LT1's too, I had to sell my LS1 to help pay for school and picked up a 94 Z/28 with full bolt ons, hot cam and 4'10's and its just as quick as my bolt on LS1 was. Its all in how far you wanna take the car but for a quick DD a LT1 will do fine and it will be in better condition for that price

I could use a better tune, but it put 320 hp and 345 torque down through 4'10's I still need to get to the track. and Im missing a few bolt ons also. So once I finish the bolt ons it should be right around 350 RWHP which is good enough for a DD IMO. Also for me its nice too b/c my 94 is OBD1 so its easier to get inspected. I mean dont get me wrong if I was looking for a ton of power I would probally get a LS1 but for a DD an LT1 is fine for me. Im planing on putting a 75-100 shot on it to get it a consistent 11 second car and I mean when its all said and done ill have under 7500 into the car and will hopefully run 11's.

Maybe he meant to say $19000..lol. Anyway...to the OP...$5000 will be hard to find a decent LS1...but I have had both, and if I only had the 5G to play with I would hunt down a nice LT1 car. They can be found in nice shape for 5G and you say you arent looking to break records right away...seems like an LT1 is a good fit.

are you sure about the hardtop t/a? Ive seen one that i can remember. It was a pewter t/a 6spd. i didnt think it was that rare. i mean i have a 6spd hardtop Z but it never crossed my mind that my counterpart was rare
