If its at the bottom of the pan what about using a stronger magnet to get it get it to slide to where you can use a grabber or a pen magnet.

Luckily my dad was able to get it out with a magnet after I gave up. It was all the way down in the lowest section of the pan too.

I got lucky.

Thanks for all the help and sympathy

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never done any work on my LS1.

How do you change the oil pump without either removing the pan, or moving it far enough out of the way that the wrench would be easily gotten with your hand?

Your friend ran around for a year with a keyway in his oilpan? Damn. I couldn't have done that. It would have droven me crazy.

The oil pump is in the front of the motor.
You "ONLY" have to take off the belts, water pump, harmonic balancer, radiator and drop the oil pan (it only goes down about an inch or so) so you can unbolt the pickup tube. Oh, and take out the starter in my case to jam the flexplate to break loose the harmonic balance bolt which is on there with some extreme torque. lol pain in the ***.

Oh but hey, now that it's all said and done, I finally have the oil pressure that the car should have... Feel much better about my 120k mile LS1 now.

He probably made 25-30 low 10 second passes at the track too.

is this really worth the trouble? a wrench that size isn't going to cause any trouble down there. It can't go anywhere or hit anything. I know it's unsettling to know it's in there but you'll get over it...
