Default Help... Dropped a wrench in the oil pan. 98 Z

Ok so I was changing my oil pump on the LS1 camaro and I dropped the 10mm wrench in the oil pan when I was tightening the pickup tube bolt

Any suggestions on how the F to get it out. I've tryed playing around with magnets but it's not happening. How do I take off the oil pan on these cars? Lift the motor? K member? wth I'm a little confused by the ls1's tactics.

Try and get a flex magnet and fish around, that would by far be faster than any alternative. You could remove the K member or lift the motor, but it'll be faster to fish it out. Try a mirror and flashlight to look down in it.

Try a magnet....a flex one to fish around with and perhaps one to use on the outside of the pan which may help you drag the wrech up the side of the pan, allowing you to snag it with pliers, magnet, or fingers....

Good luck.

PS, it really isn't the end of the world, you could have dropped a lifter lolol...

They have some heavy duty pen magnets, try that. to get a wrench out youre gonna have to lift the engine to get the pan down enough.

good job being different and dropping the wrench instead of the bolt, lol

Thanks guys I've already tryed everything thats been suggested, no luck.

I guess I'm going to have to pull the motor? Can I just lift it up a few inches to get the oil pan off or what? Any sites with directions?

Thanks in advance

Well, now that you have to lift the engine a little bit to drop the oil pan, might as well do a motor swap.

Or if you are pulling the Kmember time to install a tubular!

yea, just unbolt the motor mounts and raise the engine slightly. just raise it enough to get the pan out. its fairly straightforward

Interesting story, when I had my mustang me and my friend were putting the engine back in after it had been built. My friend was chaining the hoist down and a washer slipped out of his hand and down through the intake port and into the cylinder. Eventually we took two zip ties and tied them together and put a magnet on the end of it, worked but it took a while. Good luck!

If you can see the box end of the wrench , try to use a coathanger or a thin piece of wire. Bend it into a hook and try to carefully fish it out. I have used this method to grab wrenches that have fell down into small tight spots woth great success. hope you can resolve it without removing the oil pan!

how are you trying to get at the wrench? are you able to be at the same level as the pan? try this, plus get a good flashlight so you can see into the pan. Dont get discouraged I dropped one of the oil pump bolts in the pan and I was pisses but after getting a bendable mirror, flashlight and a flexible 3lb magnet I got to it real easy

Many years ago I was helping a friend do a cam swap in his IROC and he dropped a keyway into the oil pan. We tried for hours to find it with no luck. About a year later we pulled the motor and found the keyway in the bottom of the oil pan. Good luck, I remember how aggravating it was when we could not find that keyway.

Damn, this sounds like some of the situations I get into. Keep trying man. Sometimes you have to leave and go back and try again. Good luck.
