Default MAF screen

What does the screen on the MAF do? Because there are some aftermarket MAFs that dont have the screens. So what is their purpose?

It straightens out the airflow so that the MAF can always get consistent readings. Whether you need it or not will always be a debate. Some cars need it some don't, it depends on the configuration of the intake track and how turbulent the air is as it enters the MAF

It also helps keep some of the things that might get by your air filter, but I doubt that it the main reason of it. I have run the stock with screen and after market with out. I prefer the stocker it runs better and fits better also.

Yep....this is one of the never ending debates on whether it is necessary or not. Either way it is there to "straighten" out the air flow coming through the MAF.

Keep it unless you are going to run a dry nitrous kit.

That's definitely NOT its purpose, but it has served that function for me as I once found an entire leaf stuck on it I said a few choice words with that one...

Flow straighteners (honeycomb type material) are used all the time in aeronautical engineering...even with the research I'm doing, and they work well. My vote is to keep it for consistency's sake.

Granted I run no MAF at all...just a 4" tube with no screen

I agree. There's no way anything is getting past my lid/filter. But what the hell, it certainly does server as a backup.

All ZO6 cars never had them and still don't have them either, they are pointless....period.

They are not made to catch crap your filter did not. If by some vodoo chance crap got past your filter then it was your fault and I'm sure it can/has got past that crap MAF screen.

Peace,
Craig.

i agree!! that thing is pointless! we removed it on all our cars, and i remove it from freinds cars too! but the LS1's intake is a vacum machine that sucks anything!

MAF screens are POINTLESS. I believe the reason they used screens in LS1's in the first place was to smooth out the incoming air flow but IMO mass air is more beneficial with a proper tune. Man I'm so sick of seeing this same question over, and over, and over, and over.... I don't know how you do it Cragar ^^^

Well its not hurting anything untill you start getting to the point where the maf screen is causing a restriction like when your car is putting down 500 crank HP IMO.

The whole argument about the ZO6 not having it is not valid. That's a completely different intake tract from the F-body.
