Im thinking about buying a 2000 z28 6 speed with 59000 miles.I think Im switching over to chevy (currently have a street/strip mustang).Im looking at trading in my chevy truck for it.Its going to be a daily driver (60 miles to and from work).I guess my questions are is the six speed trannys reliable? Is there a difference in power or reliability in the 98-2002 year models. What should I look over for when purchasing this car? What is the weak link if any on the z28s.Thanks for any help I can get.Im just nervous about buying a used sports car.

Exactly. The M6 is a great transmission and will last. A '00 won't have the z06 clutch I believe so a new clutch might be in order with that amount of miles.

Well I think first off with 59,000 miles you will add up miles on that car quickly so maybe look for a lower mile car as you will want to drive it since they are fun. The 6speed trannys hold up very well when not abused unless your making in excess of 400rwhp you will have to get a better clutch. The power differences are maybe 10rwhp if that over the years. The 01 has a ls6intake so it will make slightly more then 98 99 and 00 years but they all perform pretty much the same as far as performance but some can dyno anywhere from 285-310 or so but most are right around the 300mark as all dynos read different. The weak link is definetly the stock 10bolt as some blow up under stock power but thats from the gear jammers I think and the car has to be pretty abused to blow up under stock power. If you just drive the car it will be fine as some guys make over 500rwhp and are still on the stock 10bolt so its not impossible it just all matters on how you drive. I would just check for basic things on the car like fluid levels and make sure the car shifts well and there are no leaks and look for signs on accidents check the frame drive it and dont be afraid to push it hard on the test drive and see how the motor likes the higher RPMs and see if it feels strong. Main thing is just check all fluids and see if they are clean. If they are not then the car has been let go and try to get a feel off the owner as how he may have treated the car. Thats all I can think of for now and lets let a few others chime in.
goodluck man and dont worry if the car was taken care of you will be extremely happy and the 25+mpgs on the highway with the 6speed you will love

Yes it is, my T56 is bone stock behind my 427ci for a little more than 4 years. The clutch will go with alot of mods and of course driver, but can hold. The 4L60 auto is junk, they go emo with bolt-on cars.
The 01-02 cars put down around 10rwhp more. Reliability is same/fine with all. Just depends on who owns them.
Any used car look for body panels not lined up right, and check if the t-tops are not all popped up (if it has t-tops). Check for overspray in wheel well areas and under the car to see if it had body work.
Weak link/crap parts:
10-bolt rear end
front rotors warping
power windows
speakers blown
...I'm sure that I have forgot some.
Also get a carfax on it. Find a few cars you are interested in and for like $20 get Carfax for a month and run them all.
Peace,
Craig.

I think its a fairdeal if the car has been taken care of and not totally beat to hell. I would try to go look at it first before you even think about putting a bid in. I think you can also find lower mile cars for similar or slightly high prices in good shape as well

thanks
Yeah the car is only about an hour from me Im going this weekend or sooner to check it out.Im trying to keep my price range 10 or below.Where is yalls oil pressure guage reading on a good running engine? Also what about the temp guage?
#16
my oil guage almost maxes out under throttle 3/4's anyway. As I understand it, 99 and up the temp guage is not a guage, it's an indicator, which means it only has a few positions it jumps between. I think mine just stays on half way all the time.
