12561168 is the number for an LS6 block.
My '02 has the block, it doesn't seem as smooth as the LS1 out of my '98.
I got flamed to hell the first time I asked that in a forum.

the ls6 block casting number is 12561168 ...ne thing else is a ls1 block... i did a quick search and thats what i found, i assume its correct info...

check out this link... searches bring up a ton of info on this site ...

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ight=block+ls6

FWIW... the ls6 block doesn't give you any better performance then the ls1... if anything, its just bragging rights.

sure your looking in the correct place for the part number? you should be looking on the drivers side, back of the block just above the trans.

also, the difference between an ls6 and ls1 is a few passages to provide better oiling. there are alot of rumors as to what the differences are but the passages seems to be pretty constant.

It's right under the parting line between the drivers side head and block, it's a cast number not stamped, if you have the trans out you should see it easy.

What about in the valley? Visually isn't there some several protruding lines or something on part of the casting in there.

From JRP's Frequently Asked Questions Sitcky in Newby Tech. There is also a picture of the block.

How to tell if you have an LS6 Block

15% of 01s and 25% of 02's got the LS6 Block. The only way to tell 100% is to check the casting number. As you can see in the above pic (my ls6 block ) the casting number is at the top of the deck on the drivers side. Take a mirror and place it behind the block and check or jack up the car and attempt to look from the bottom. The "easier" ways are the casting hue and bulleye methods but none are conclusive. If you really want to know if you have the block you'll need to do the work and look for yourself, end of story.

Once you have determined if you have an LS6 block (ya you), then the only benefit to the block are the bay windows.

Its generally accepted from most engine builders that if your going for an extreme setup that the LS1 block offers more structural strength over the LS6 block.

THE LS6 BLOCK DOES NOT INCREASE HP, REPEAT AFTER ME "IF I HAVE AN LS6 BLOCK IT DOES NOT INCREASE POWER". LEARN IT, SAY IT, REPEAT IT.
