SUPPOSEDLY one of the troopers around here had a blown z as his cruiser. (he did have the z for fact, my cousin his neighbor said it was blown..and heard from others at the time) Who knows, that'd be a sick job though. Uh I'm going to get paid to cruise in my S/C Z28 today.

for an auto I would have to say as soon as or just a little over the point when the tranny kicks into 4th and the tq converter locks. If not familiar with the auto's but if it jumps into 4th under light load and the engine will run under 1500 rpm, then I would take an educated guess that slightly faster up to around 1500-1700 rpm is where you might have the highest intake vacuum resulting in the best gas mileage. This is assuming flat road constant speed.
my 99 ss was an M6 with 3.42 rear and I consistently got 27-29 on the highway driving to work when my commute was 30 miles, basically flat enough road and constant speed. this was highway only, where the car would be hot, I'd fill the gas tank do my trip then immediately refill the gas tank and check mileage vs refilled gas. And this was 65-70mph most of the time at 1500-1700 rpm.
I did try real hard once on a 50 mile trip and got about 31mpg and that was keeping it 55-60mph on a 65mph highway (not easy)
My 02ss gets less economy, only about 27mpg when I try doing 65-70. The 99ss had more grunt at low rpm than my 02ss does.

the 99's have a different cam and heads than an 02 has, they generate more low rpm power. if you ever raced stock to stock 99 ls1 vs. 02 ls1 the 99 will pull hard off the line with the 02 catching hard in 2nd

What about a '00? I know the '01-02 had a different cam (I thought would promote low-end but I guess not) but I notice my engine is way out of the "powerband" at cruising speed with the 2.73's. My engine doesn't really pick up until 2500 rpm or more, and at 70mph I'm doing 1750 rpm.
