whats the diff between the two and how can i get it to work???

The '98 cluster is not interchangeable with 99+. You need a '98 cluster for a '98 car....no way around it. A 99+ cluster will not work in your car.

The 98 cluster is basically a 97 cluster with a different tach and the fuel gauge works on a different resistance value. The main difference with the 99 up cars is the cluster gets a signal for most everything through a single serial data wire.

The 97 and 98 clusters are single year pieces and don't interchange.
