How do YOU increase your gas mileage?

with todays gas prices, none of this matters. Just dont drive the car during the week at all and buy a cheapy daily driver. Unless of course your fbody is your "cheapy daily driver", then theres no way to get much 'better' gas mileage. Just dont floor it and dont rev the engine and you should get 300 miles or more to one gas tank if you're lucky

i can't speak for everyone else but my gas milage increased when i installed long tube headers, ory, magnaflow ezhaust, and lid. this was all highway driving and no wot. i went about 200 miles and used only little over a 1/4 tank of gas. before i used alittle over a half tank going the same distance.

Driving Stlyle
Went on a road trip the other weekend. Decided to make an actual effort to see what kind of mileage I could actually get.
Drove on a regular 4 lane highway, a couple stoplights along the way. One stop at Mcdonald's. Windows up, cruise on at 65 mph on the way there. T-tops off and windows down on the trip home, cruise set at 60 mph.
Driving style: Did not skip gears. Shifted at 2500 rpm. Accelerated moderately. Moderately to me is accelerating at the same speed as the rest of the traffic coming off a stoplight, instead of shooting ahead. It was also weird to have people pass me as I was cruising at the speed limit. usually, I pass everyone else.
Checked my mileage when I got home. 27.3 MPG highway.
Went cruising the next day. All in town driving. Stop and go, errands and stuff. Drove the same way, easy on the gas, shift at 2500 rpm.
Checked mileage. 17 MPG city driving.
Now, this doesn't mean I'm never gonna play whenever I get in the car. But it is nice to know how economical the car can be if I do my part. I really do enjoy just driving the car. I don't need to hotrod the thing to have fun.

By "lean cruise", I take it the computer calls for less fuel going in. Does this kick in when you are driving at a steady speed, or is it when the cruise control is on?
Also, does this interfere with throttle response when you decide to romp on it?
I'm trying not to sound too dumb here, but this it the first v8 car I've owned where you can increase performance with just a computer program. Amazing.
Thanks.

lean cruise leans it out on coast. essentially the stock tune is very rich, leaning it out on coast, and leaning it out at idle will save you MPG with no cost to performance.

Ok. That makes it easy. Thanks. I think I've experienced the lean cruise. If it's what I'm thinking, when I run up the rpm's a bit in a lower gear, and let off the gas, it feels like the fuel supply has been shut off or reduced.

I dont know whats up with everyone elses car... but my m6 t/a gets better mileage above the speed limit. Especially if its 65. At 65 -70 i get about 20 mpg, with cruise control. bump it up to 75-80 and i get over 25 mpg. I do almost no city driving so i cant comment on my current city mileage. Best mileage ever was driving to florida, in december so it was cold, i had the cruise on at 80, windows up, a/c off, no heat, and just parking lights on (minimal work for the alt.) I got 29 mpg.

Low RPM's, lite pedal pressure, coast to light if red, brake early brake often (always keep some momentum if possible rather then come to complete stops).

Yup, I do all these things. Also pick traffic lanes accordingly, stay in one where you don't get stuck behind alot of people stopping to make left turns, coast down hills, use the cruise when possible.
I actually just got my best tankful last week, 24.2mpg. Stock LS1, A4, 2.73's.

I think it's because even at 80mph, a stock geared M6 is still only turning 2k rpm.
When I had my 98 Formula M6, I used to set the cruise at 80, any lower than that it seemed like the rpm's were too low and the engine bogged. I did my mileage once, I did the 2.5 hour trip to the track, ran 4 runs, and then got 27.2mpg.
I've actually noticed the same thing with my 2.73 geared A4 this past week. I usually run at 60-65mph, but I've been staying closer to 70 this week. I got my best tank ever, 24.2mpg. I dont get this in the city obviosly, but this is mixed, with a majority of highway.
I guess it's just a matter of putting the engine in the right rpm range.

The sooner you get to the destination, the sooner you can turn off the engine and quit burning fuel. That's why I try to drive as fast as the road and traffic will allow. Just trying to do my part.
