I've always done 5.5 qts. That's what the owners manual says. You can put too much oil in and cause problems. You don't want so much it gets up on the bottom of the crank as it spins.

we had a kohler cv740 or somethin close to it (thats a 27 horse v twin) come in two weeks ago makin all kinds of noise.. tear it down beat up lifter bases, flattened cam, the rest of the cam surfaces were likewise damaged.. and waht kind of oil was the guy running? amsoil.
we know the guy too, he takes care of his stuff pretty well, the oil wasnt low, nor was it even that dirty. hes a good paying customer and never really complains about the bill.. so i wouldnt say he'd be one of those guys that F's up their motor pours in fresh oil brings it to us and says "i donno what happened it just quit runnin" yea. ok. if one lifter had failed on its own it would have likely only damaged that one lobe on the cam, being as all the surfaces were beat up and that engine has non adjustable/hydraulic valvetrain, there is a possibility the oil had something to do with it.
amsoil may be good oil, in the past i've heard mixed reviews but in all fairness more good than bad. but i wont run it.
rotella is way overlooked but is actually damn good oil.
pretty much anything close to a 30wt in your average internal combustion engine will do the trick.
the bottle size change is sneaky in my opinion too, it ALMOST looks like the old 5 qt bottle to the jackass that says he would always notice it %100 of the time. he must not own a mircrometer because his eye is so good he can see .005 from .006.. must be nice. i guess he doesnt make mistakes, nor is he ever rushed.

Put in 5.5 quarts of oil - like you're supposed to.

I always have to put 5.75 quarts in my '98 to get the dipstick to read full. 5.5 for my '02 though. That's using a stock length filter.
6 quarts won't hurt anything. Still plenty of clearance for the crank. Many people I know have run 6 for many years and many 10s of thousands of miles without failures. I wouldn't sweat it.

The only time someone would ever tell you to put 6 quarts of oil in the LS1 is if you're running the taller truck-style LS1 filters that hold a lot more oil. Shoving extra oil inside the motor is a HORRIBLE idea. Follow the specifications inside the book and don't listen to what some idiot you've never met on a forum before told you what he heard once somewhere from his brother's friend's friend who knew a guy. HORRIBLE idea. I'd never put 7 quarts of oil in an LS1, that's a 27.3% increase in oil inside the motor - oil that the motor wasn't designed to hold. Do you have any idea how much extra pressure that is that the motor has to deal with all the time? Don't be surprised when you blow piston rings or God knows what else thanks to ridiculous oil pressure that your motor can't handle.
Put in 5.5 quarts of oil - like you're supposed to.

I think he is talking about pressure in the crankcase. Not oil pressure. Ls1 blocks already have issues with that. That was why the ls6 block has passages between the mainwebs to allow pressure to move between main webs in the block.

And I usually changed my oil every 2,500 miles because I like the feel of the engine with fresh oil in it (plus I wanted something to do in the garage on days that there was nothing to do to the cars). I had a higher flowing oil pump than stock as well. I had a 3rd gen go 280,000 miles with no engine problems before using an oil that is considered better than M1.
I know it could be millions of other reasons that caused it and if I had a different LS1 under the same circumstances it wouldn't have happened but I still have to think that what if I was using German Castrol or Pennzoil Platinum. I'll stick with whatever oil is considered the best from now on, even if it's only for my peace of mind.

So time for an oil change on the SS. I always use mobli 1, and Wal-Mart always had the 5qt containers for a good price. I was in a hurry and picked one up. Time to change the oil. Drained the oil used the Nappa gold filter, poured in the Mobil 1 & noticed the 5qt container is no longer 5qts. Now only 4 qts for the same price.

Not my only car, but what a sneaky way to raise the price. Just raise the F!@#ing price, don't put in a smaller amount and think no one will notice.
Switching oils now. Just need to think about what I want to use.
No longer a Mobil 1 fan.
